Description
The British Consulate-General in Guangzhou represents the United Kingdom across southern China. Our main role includes: developing trade and investment opportunities between the UK and China; and promoting bilateral co-operation between the British government and the provincial governments of southern China on issues such as climate change, tackling international crime, and education. We are also committed to providing the highest quality service to British Citizens in China and to Chinese nationals wishing to visit, study and do business in the UK.

The British Consulate General is establishing a 6-person Climate Change and Energy team as part of a network of Climate Change and Energy officers in our Embassy and Consulates-General. The team will be working to tackle one of the most important challenges facing the global community – how to avoid the catastrophic impacts of unchecked climate change. The team will work to develop a programme of bilateral UK-China projects in order to promote a global shift to a low-carbon, high-growth economy.

Specific roles and requirements

LEI Senior Climate Change and Energy Programme Manager

This officer will work independently to scope for and develop projects on climate change and energy in southern China. They will need to deputise for the UK head of the Climate Change and Energy team and be the chief technical adviser to the Consulate-General and British Government on climate change and energy work in southern China.

We require an experienced professional in the climate change and energy field, such as related academic, government or industry experience

This is a busy and challenging job so you will need to demonstrate excellent communication, presentation skills and sound judgement and over all being a good team player and leader. We will give you as much responsibility as you can take.


LE3 Climate Change and Energy Officer

For this role previous experience in the climate change and energy areas would be an advantage but it is not essential - we can provide the necessary training. However, an active interest in the subject is important.

You will be supporting the team in developing projects in southern China on climate change and energy. Previous project management experience is highly desirable and proven communication skills will be essential. This will be a challenging and busy job. For a talented candidate we can provide significant project management responsibilities.

LE4 Climate Change and Energy Assistant

This officer will provide administrative, translation and research support to the Climate Change and Energy Team. Previous experience in climate change and energy work is not essential but an interest in the subject is important.

This officer will need a good eye for detail and a methodical approach to work. The basis of the work will be administrative – making bookings, doing research, translation etc. For a talented candidate, we can provide additional, challenging responsibilities.

Essential requirements for all jobs

The LE3 and LE4 officers must be Chinese nationals.

For the LE1 officer, we are seeking a Chinese national. We may have some flexibility to employ non-Chinese nationals if they can bring an outstanding portfolio of experience to the role.

For all jobs you must be educated to degree level and have a high degree of fluency in Mandarin Chinese and English. Fluency in Cantonese would be an advantage.

We offer a competitive salary package, with excellent development opportunities and a 20 day annual leave entitlement. Starting monthly salaries before tax are:
