Advocacy

Legislative Director
Location: Boston, MA

Mass Audubon's Beacon Hill Legislative Affairs Office serves both as a leader and a catalyst for conservation by stimulating legislative action to protect the nature of Massachusetts. The Legislative Director directs all aspects of the Legislative Affairs Office following Mass Audubon policies, priorities, plans, and procedures in cooperation with other departments, offices, and sanctuaries of the organization. 

Responsibilities

  • Identifies, drafts, and furthers Mass Audubon state, federal, and local legislative priorities; coordinates their review and approval by the organization; develops and maintains good working relationships with state elected and appointed officials and staff to promote and advance Mass Audubon’s mission.
  • Develops and implements strategies for achieving Mass Audubon’s legislative agenda.
  • Represents Mass Audubon at the Massachusetts State House, executive branch agencies, and other governmental offices, and in local communities.
  • Regularly addresses public forums and organizations in order to promote Mass Audubon’s mission and legislative agenda.
  • Directs the planning, writing, and preparation of legislative fact sheets, bill testimonies, The Beacon Hill Weekly Round-Up e-newsletter, Action Alerts, informational brochures, Legislative Report Cards, and materials for Mass Audubon’s website.
  • Provides special expertise on state legislative and policy matters to guide the public positions and actions of Mass Audubon, colleague organizations, and citizens.
  • Directs all Legislative Affairs Office special events.

Qualifications: Bachelors degree in science, public affairs, political science, or related field; 7 years’ experience in conservation, environmental or energy policy and/or legislative advocacy and in working cooperatively with citizens, non-governmental organizations, and government agencies in achieving related goals; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to lead staff and volunteers to achieve organizational objectives. Excellent writing, computer literacy, and verbal communication skills. Must be very comfortable speaking in public. Ability to plan, delegate, and organize the work required to meet overall objectives. Required to occasionally work long and irregular work hours. A valid driver’s license is required.
