The International Fund for Animal Welfare works to improve the welfare of wild and domestic animals throughout the world by reducing commercial exploitation of animals, protecting wildlife habitats, and assisting animals in distress.

IFAW seeks to motivate the public to prevent cruelty to animals and to promote animal welfare and conservation policies that advance the well-being of both animals and people.

Purpose

The Legacy/Fundraising Officer, based in the Netherlands office, works closely with the Head of Major and Legacy Giving, based in the UK office, to develop and implement a strategy to increase income from legacy gifts, sustainer donors and online giving. Responsibilities include identifying prospective donors, managing donor relationships and stewardship and also developing a programme that generates income from constituents based in the Netherlands and France.

 Accountabilities/Responsibilities

  • Assist in creating and implementing a programme that successfully promotes legacy gifts. 
  • Work closely with Supporter Relations staff to develop prospect lists.  Cultivate, solicit and steward legacy prospects.
  • Ensure that IFAW’s entitlements are received as per our supporters’ wishes and in compliance with legal obligations.  Work with solicitors, executors and other charities (when necessary).
  • Take all necessary steps to avoid Inheritance and/ or Capital Gains Tax liability where appropriate.
  • Advise the Head of Major and Legacy Giving, UK of cases where there is a need to instruct solicitors and be responsible for those instructions.
  • Prepare and submit claims for refund of tax to the relevant tax authorities on a quarterly basis.
  • Check and, where necessary, question estate accounts to ensure that all residuary gifts are maximised and distributed to IFAW.
  • Work closely with existing donors to encourage movement to the sustainer (monthly giving) program. 
  • Assist in developing ways to increase income through the IFAW website.  Target and cultivate online donors to build the online revenue stream.
  • Achieve individual and department revenue goals and number of legacy pledges.

 Job Requirements

  • Previous senior legacy fundraising expertise and a sound understanding of law as it relates to charity legacy administration.
  • A minimum of five years experience in a relevant professional capacity at a senior level (e.g. a legal practice, legacy administration department of a charity or the probate department of a bank).
  • Sound knowledge and experience of the law relating to Wills, Probate and Trusts and associated tax laws.
  • Excellent IT skills including Word, Excel and Databases.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to work effectively with others. 
  • Excellent attention to detail including analytical skills.
  • Dutch and/or French language skills preferred.
  • Travel between Netherlands and France will be necessary.
