USGBC has an opportunity for a practical learning experience for a currently-enrolled undergraduate or graduate student with a background in communications, journalism, or media production and an interest in applying those skills to education and case study development. The LEED Stories internship is an un-paid, creditable internship involving a minimum of 10 hours per week with the option of additional hours.

The LEED Stories intern will support USGBC’s new LEED Stories from Practice initiative by conducting stakeholder interviews, editing content, and developing multimedia resources. Through this internship, the intern will gain experience in interviewing, writing, editing, and multimedia development; have broad exposure to green building stakeholders; and gain advanced knowledge about green building and LEED. A motivated, creative, and innovative candidate will offer ideas and strategies to help shape this fledgling program. The intern must be professional, enjoy working as a team, feel comfortable working with a diverse range of people, and be available to work in USGBC’s Washington, D.C. office.

Internship Details Include

  • Conduct interviews with LEED project stakeholders, ranging from owners to design professionals to consultants, etc.
  • Transcribe interview responses into education-focused narratives
  • Edit narratives and other aspects of LEED Stories from Practice submissions
  • Write LEED Stories from Practice quiz questions to support professional continuing education
  • As relevant, develop podcasts and other multi-media products to support LEED Stories from Practice project profiles
  • Catalog graphic attributes and legal permissions from LEED Stories stakeholders for education programming
  • Help inform integration of LEED Stories submissions into education programming
  • Other, as time/interest allow

Education and Training Requirements/Preferences

  • Current enrollment in graduate or undergraduate (junior or senior) degree program required, preferably in the field of communications, journalism, media production, or education

Experience Requirements

  • Prior experience communicating with diverse audiences, as this position involves interacting with professionals in the building industry
  • Knowledge or interest in sustainability, green buildings, and environmental strategies

Other Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong communications skills, including writing and editing
  • Strong interviewing skills
  • Detail-oriented
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with MS Office suite; experience with MACs, Adobe Photoshop, iMovie, and GarageBand preferred
  • Interest in green building
  • Commitment to USGBC’s mission
  • Early January start preferred, if possible
