Reports to: Senior Learning Manager
Location: Boston Office, US
Timeline: Immediate placement; 6 month term

Role Description
The objective of this role is to ensure that the learning programs you are responsible for provide an excellent Earthwatch experience* for participants which advances objectives, makes best use of resources and meets or exceeds customer expectations.

Your focus is on building a worldwide network of environmental leaders who value the environment and prioritize it in their every day choices & decision making and who have an authentic conviction & passion which influences others to do the same. These leaders will enable communities, organizations and businesses to make their policies, processes and practices more sustainable.

Key to this is managing the full life cycle (scoping, design & development, pilot, roll out, continuous improvement and impact evaluation) of learning programs, in line with Earthwatch's learning principles and contributing actively to Earthwatch's learning community of practice to grow our organizational capacity to deliver transformational learning programs across a range of audiences.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Lead on the full learning program life cycle for regional or global learning programs to include:
    - Work with (w/w) Development, Program Management and funders as relevant to scope out & agree learning program aims, objectives, outputs & outcomes
    - lead the design and development of integrated research & learning journey and core program agenda, in line with Earthwatch learning principles, to achieve program aims, objectives, outputs & outcomes
    - develop learning modules, process and materials, to include pre-work, in field & post field delivered through appropriate media
    - w/w subject matter expert contributors (including Research team, PIs, funder sustainability experts) to develop impactful and effective training sessions and materials as part of the learning program
    - facilitate pilot field teams of programs you design, capturing feedback throughout, reviewing, modifying and re-piloting program until signed off for rollout
  • Delivering learning components of other global or regional learning programs as required, to include in field facilitation
  • Building excellence in Earthwatch's capacity to develop and deliver high impact, integrated research & learning programs, w/w Program Team and funders as relevant, to include:
    - Delivery of train the trainers for Earthwatch facilitators
    - Providing ongoing coaching and support to Earthwatch field program facilitators
    - w/w Research and Safety SMEs to deliver integrated PI training programs
  • Ensure effective learning impact evaluation of learning programs, to include:
    - w/w Program Manager to identify the learning measure of success for each program, building from Earthwatch core measures of success
    - leading on internal and external learning impact evaluation studies & reports
    - producing and maintaining learning histories for learning programs, incorporating feedback from multiple perspectives
  • w/w regional Development and program team, providing learning input & support for scoping, resourcing and budget potential new programs and renewals, as relevant
  • Contribute to global learning community of practice, by sharing experiences, resources & innovative programs, supporting the community to learn & grow professionally, enabling Earthwatch to increase mission impact

Specific Responsibilities of this role:
This role will have responsibility for the learning deliverables associated with a variety of corporate programs, to include leading regional program design, facilitation and learning impact evaluation.

Key Relationships and Interface
A key requirement of this role is the effective collaboration with other parts of the organization across functions and regions, funders and external contractors.

  • Key collaboration with core learning SMEs for support and functional input as required, and to contribute to learning community of practice, building our organisational capacity to deliver high impact learning programs
  • Key collaboration with research SMEs to design & manage environmental educational and learning curricula, as required by programs
  • Key collaboration with online program manager, to incorporate online learning & resources into programs, as relevant
  • Key relationship with Senior Program Managers/Program as relevant, to align program development with grant deliverables & resources and to provide technical learning input/support to the development of new proposals as required
  • Interface with relevant funder stakeholders, including Learning & Development, Corporate Sustainability and Program Management
  • Interface with 3rd party partners involved in delivery of learning programs

Personal Specification:
required experience, competencies and management behaviors

You should be an experienced learning practitioner with:

  • at least 5 years relevant experience working in learning and development across a range of audiences
  • understanding of and experience working with learner-centered principles, models and practices for organizational and personal behavior change
  • proven track record of successfully managing the full learning program life cycle
  • experience of delivering experiential learning programs, facilitating participatory processes and group learning and development
  • knowledge and understanding of the environmental and sustainability agendas, with the ability to apply your skills and experience to the sustainability context
  • high emotional intelligence with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • ability to think creatively to identify business relevant opportunities and solutions for sustainability learning programs
  • ability to create actionable plans which deliver against business plan objectives
  • credible and persuasive - able to represent Earthwatch Learning to external organizations and forum
  • strong leadership skills - able to work off own initiative and influence effectively through a matrix organization
  • willingness to undertake significant business travel, up to 25%
