POSITION SUMMARY

The Nature Conservancy’s Leaders in Environmental Action for the Future (LEAF) Program is a partnership between the world’s largest conservation organization and environmentally themed high schools in cities across the U.S. LEAF is an ambitious initiative to empower the next generation of conservation leaders. With the support of the Toyota USA Foundation, LEAF is expanding a nationally-recognized partnership model with New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut high schools to combine classroom lessons with real-world conservation work experience for urban youth. The program provides paid summer conservation jobs for students in natural areas and helps educators from environmental high schools share best practices and curricula during the academic year.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Northeast LEAF Coordinator will coordinate LEAF activities with high schools in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey and in partnership with other Conservancy State programs where LEAF teams will live and work during the summer field season. Duties include, but are not limited to, donor prospecting; arranging logistics such as housing, car rentals & finances; recruiting students and mentor participants; visiting environmental high schools for facilitation of student recruitment, orientation, and hiring paperwork process; managing corporate credit cards for mentors and completing electronic concur reconciliation; completing electronic time reports for participants; coordinating program awards celebration, and evaluation and program follow up as needed.  The Northeast LEAF Coordinator will work closely with the LEAF North America Program and NYC Operations, before, during, and after the field season.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Create intern and mentor recruitment materials
  • Coordinate hiring process for all interns
  • Secure appropriate and affordable housing and travel arrangements, often to very remote areas and with little local information.
  • Create and maintain positive relationships with school contacts and Conservancy staff
  • Learn computer programs to successfully complete organizational functions such as time reporting and travel expense reports
  • Plan and execute special events related to intern recognition and training
  • Provide information for donor prospecting and reporting
  • Work with Conservancy staff to ensure compliance with youth labor laws and other human resources requirements
  • Maintain team field equipment
  • Coordinate program evaluation information
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years related experience or equivalent combination. 
  • Experience in organizing and managing a program demonstrating knowledge of the structure and needs required.
  • Experience in MS Office, Word, Excel, and navigating the Internet.
  • Experience with communication skills, written communication skills and experience delivering presentations and communicating information to a diverse audience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years related experience or equivalent combination.
  • Minimum 1 year experience in organizing and managing a program demonstrating knowledge of the structure and needs required.
  • Demonstrated experience in MS Office, Word and Excel.  Prefer database management skills with ability to produce reports.  Ability to use advanced computer functions including navigating the Internet.
  • Proven organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience working with urban youth from diverse backgrounds and cultures

AUTO SAFETY POLICY

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION

  • Requires frequent travel in the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut area, and other travel for several days at a time.  Requires evening and weekend work.
