Description

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world’s leading conservation organization, seeks a Lead Scientist, Oceans. This position, which is based in Washington, DC, serves as the leading scientific expert on marine science for WWF-US, and as a key technical advisor to the WWF Network. The incumbent advises WWF-US on cutting-edge, and policy-relevant science to support the development of strategies and investments for ocean conservation; conducts critical marine conservation science; remains current on scientific developments to support innovative approaches to ocean conservation at global, continental, ecoregional, and local scales; provides leadership and management of the Science staff of the Oceans Goal; tracks progress on achieving the overall the Oceans goal; and leads and supports fundraising efforts.

  1. Works with Oceans team colleagues to ensure that the WWF US Oceans program is grounded in, and informed by, the best available science.
  2. Provides scientific and policy expertise to specific projects as needed, and more broadly throughout WWF-US and the Network as assigned and appropriate.
  3. Promotes innovative and experimental approaches to ocean conservation including new research or synthesis of research that provides insight to policy and field implementation activities of the Oceans team.
  4. Identifies opportunities for research and collaborations with other institutions to advance WWF’s Ocean conservation goals.
  5. Stays abreast of the scientific literature on marine science as related to ocean conservation and shares important findings with Oceans team staff.
  6. Leads impact estimation for the Oceans program and links that work across relevant goal teams.
  7. Manages science staff and science initiatives of the WWF-US Oceans Goal.
  8. Represents WWF-US to promote WWF’s ocean conservation objectives, activities, and projects.
  9. Develops, analyzes and manages operating plans and grant budgets.
  10. Leads and supports fundraising. Researches and develops proposals. Prepares and finalizes scopes of work and budgets. Ensures compliance with donor reporting requirements.
  11. Builds and maintains partnerships with key conservation NGOs, government agencies, academics, and other groups with ocean conservation science interests.

 



  • Doctorate in a relevant area of marine science as applied to natural resources, including broad graduate training in ocean sciences, marine or conservation biology, or other field of oceanography or highly relevant discipline is required.
  • Must possess a minimum of 10 years’ experience in a field of marine science related to ocean conservation as well as experience leading collaborative ocean conservation research projects, and integrating science to conservation strategies. Demonstrated experience fundraising for, and leading, major donor-funded projects is needed.
  • Broad knowledge in the fields of ocean biodiversity conservation and expertise in a particular area of marine science is required.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills are a must.
  • Strong organizational skills as well as the ability to analyze, prioritize, and complete work with minimal supervision, and meet deadlines is needed.
  • Project management experience and diplomatic skills are required.
  • Must have experience coaching and managing other team members.
  • Ability to facilitate the work of others, take initiative, use independent judgment, work effectively as a member of a team and delegate/empower others where appropriate.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals across cultures and time zones.
  • Up to 25% domestic and international travel is required.
