The Elephant Sanctuary, a non-profit organization, has an immediate opening for a lead Asian elephant caregiver. The Sanctuary’s management philosophy offers a unique experience to qualified candidates. The Sanctuary and its caregivers are leading the way in employing a new and progressive model of captive elephant care. Progressive attitudes and management style are powerful tools that enrich the lives of elephants and caregivers alike. Experienced elephant keepers can now pursue a career that utilizes their skills and knowledge while allowing them to develop respectful relationships with the elephants in their care.

This position requires a high school diploma or GED; a minimum of four years of elephant management experience; exposure to protected contact management experience is mandatory. Free contact experience is a plus but not mandatory. This position will require that the chosen applicant develops new skills managing female elephants in a natural-habitat setting, utilizing Passive Control, an innovative non-dominance management system.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to elephant care and welfare, record keeping, cleaning, food preparation, behavior conditioning, intern training, staff supervision and shift scheduling. Construction and facility maintenance skills are a plus. 

Candidate must show leadership skills, be a team player, be physically fit and able to lift 50 lbs., have a strong work ethic and a progressive attitude toward the welfare of captive elephants. In the required cover letter the candidate must demonstrate a knowledge and appreciation for the Sanctuary’s mission.  Passion, empathy, academic study and experience are all weighed when making our final determination on a candidate.

Salary is dependant upon applicant’s experience and expertise and includes benefits; 6 months probationary period.
