About the role

We have an exciting and challenging opportunity for a reliable, self motivated and experienced lawyer who thrives in a team environment to join our Climate & Energy team in Warsaw. The Lawyer will have primary responsibility for developing the work undertaken by the team on renewable energy development and transformation towards low-emission economy.

This role involves legal and policy analysis, ongoing legislative advice and legal support to project partners, development of national case studies and the production of briefings, reports and legislative proposals.  The role includes strategy development and policy advocacy, campaigning and communication related to renewable energy.

You have outstanding thinking and analytical abilities that will enable you to bring a creative approach to the law and use of legal practice. The track record you have built in your professional field to date equips you to develop a strong understanding of EU climate and energy law, environmental law, infrastructure, energy market reform, competition and state aid, public law, and apply this in law and policy development, legislative, and implementation settings at national and European level. You are adaptable, resilient and able to take initiative to collaborate with others to develop relationships and strategies. You are committed to environmental issues.

Climate & Energy Programme Overview

ClientEarth’s Climate and Energy Programme aims to advance development of law and policy to drive Europe’s transition to a low carbon, efficient and sustainable energy system. We work on strategies to avoid lock-in to damaging high carbon infrastructure, and to promote solutions and action in recognition of Europe’s leadership role in global action on climate change. We act as independent legal advocates and experts in close cooperation with partner organisations and initiatives at EU level, and with a national focus in the UK and Poland in particular.


Project description

The lawyer will support the implementation of projects undertaken by the Climate & Energy Team, in particular those related to renewable energy. The Climate and Energy programme works as an integrated team between Warsaw, Brussels and London, and this role involves working on issues in both Polish and European law and at EU and national level.


Working relationships

The lawyer will work under the supervision of the Polish Energy Project Leader. The lawyer will also have key relationships across the Climate and Energy Programme and more widely across ClientEarth’s programmes and functions including development and communications.


Job responsibilities

  • Legal and policy work supporting renewable energy development and transformation towards low-emission economy
  • Research and analysis to produce high quality written work products tailored to communicate our thinking related to renewable energy to a wide variety of legal, policy, political, civil society and interdisciplinary audiences.
  • Development of legislative recommendations and proposals related to renewable energy development and transformation towards low-emission economy
  • Development of legal/science briefings, policy analysis, campaign materials, publications, press releases, blogs or other material, as appropriate to the circumstances
  • Engage in policy advocacy and campaigning in terms of renewable energy, including with representatives of governmental authorities, EU institutions, NGOs and other stakeholders.
  • Participate in formal and informal forums and groups, and represent ClientEarth in external forums.
  • Identify key actors, initiate and maintain collaborative partnerships and working relationships with key organisations and contacts in the field.
  • Support fundraising processes within the team including developing concepts and proposals for submission to funders, producing activity reports for funders.
  • Develop and engage in communications associated with the programme including website communications and press relations.
  • Contribute to the strategic development of Climate & Energy Programme strategy.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.


Experience & knowledge

  • At least 4 years relevant professional experience
  • Knowledge base in one or more of the following areas: EU law and institutions, Polish/EU/international environmental, administrative or energy law.
  • Fluency in Polish and English (essential) and another European language (desirable).


Competencies and skills

  • Excellent creative, critical and lateral thinking and analytical skills and ability to grasp quickly new concepts and areas of law with an openness to learning and new ideas.
  • Excellent legal research, analysis, writing, advisory and advocacy skills
  • Strategic thinking and problem solving capabilities in a public interest law setting
  • Ability to think and plan strategically, and to break complex issues and strategies into defined, outcome-oriented activities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (in Polish and English) to give authoritative advice and influence external audiences, to adapt language, content and style to make communications relevant to policy-makers, funders, press and ability to explain complex legal issues in lay language and to modify language, content, and style to address the needs of different audiences.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a small team and as part of an international team across offices in a number of countries as well as working independently in a self-directed manner
  • Capable of developing effective working relationships with partner organisations and able to represent ClientEarth confidently in a range of forums
  • Confident working with and assimilating complex technical (scientific, energy systems and technologies, economic, carbon and energy markets and policy), political and legal material as the basis for a big picture understanding of problems, intervention points and possible solutions
  • Ability to balance priorities and work effectively with colleagues and partners of varied backgrounds and experience in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Excellent organisational skills and able to set priorities and manage multiple tasks and react positively in the light of shifting and competing timelines
  • Energetic and dedicated to working for the environment and in the public interest.


Qualifications

  • Law degree of Polish university or equivalent law degree with specialisation in Polish law


The candidate must have the ability and willingness to travel, nationally and/or internationally, mainly within the EU.
