Are you ready to spend a part of your summer in beautiful Southeast Alaska honing your skills in public interest environmental law? Would your career path benefit from time spent working on issues in Alaska that affect our nation and world as a whole? Would you thrive spending a summer in a gorgeous rainforest, surrounded by towering mountains up close and personal with flora and fauna you are not likely to experience anywhere else?

Earthjustice's mission centers on protecting people and natural resources by enforcing and strengthening environmental laws and providing clients with the best legal representation and related advocacy. Issues facing the Alaska office are ever-changing and include

  • the protection of the Alaska coastal rain forest,
  • protection of sensitive areas in northern Alaska from oil and gas development,
  • conservation of the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska marine ecosystem,
  • wildlife conservation,
  • air and water quality enforcement,
  • national park and other public lands management,
  • and mining activities in Alaska.

Under the direction of senior attorneys, the clerks' primary responsibilities are to prepare legal research and writing in furtherance of existing litigation and to aid in the development and evaluation of new cases. Clerks may also draft pleadings and prepare comments on agency regulations and actions.

Applicants must have completed their 2nd or 3rd year of law school. Good writing and research skills are a must. Education or experience with environmental and/or administrative law is preferred. The internship begins in May/June 2009. Interns are expected to work for at least 10 weeks. A $3,000 stipend will be available to defray travel and living expenses. Our application deadline is November 1, 2008 but applications will be reviewed and positions may be offered before that time to excellent candidates.

Applicants should email or send cover letter, resume, unofficial law school transcript, names and telephone numbers of two references familiar with legal writing, and legal writing sample of less than ten pages preferably by email to: eajusak@earthjustice.org including 2009 summer law clerk in the subject.
