Description

Lang Tengah Turtle Watch are looking for a candidate to join their island-based team for a 7-week, unpaid trial period at the end of the 2017 season (1st September - 20th October 2017).

This trial position is being offered as we are searching for someone to join our paid team of staff either for part, or the whole of the 2018 season, with the possibility of also working at LTTW’s mainland project, based at Tanjong Jara Resort.

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a young, but rapidly growing wildlife conservation organisation with a passionate and dynamic team.  Assuming this role will expose you to an interdisciplinary range of projects and elements, all of which are highly relevant to a holistic approach to wildlife conservation.

OUR WORK

The key to safeguarding our nesting population of turtles - predominantly Green Turtles, as well as Hawksbill - on Lang Tengah relies on our constant and continued presence on the island, as this is the main deterrent to egg poachers.

Living 24 hours a day in the camp, we regularly patrol the nesting beaches on the island by night, relocating any nests that are laid on other beaches back to the safety of Turtle Beach.

In 2018 we will expand our research programmes, incorporating various marine and terrestrial projects running alongside our ongoing sea turtle, environmental and community programmes.  If you are keen to apply, please do highlight in your covering letter where your specific interests/skills/experience lies, so we can see whether you fit in with our tentative new projects.

ACCOMMODATION

Stripped-back and open-air, the camp lies slightly recessed behind the secluded beach on Turtle Bay.  Think rustic, jungle living - bucket-showers and camp fires.  You will be living and working on camp, cooking communally and sharing/delegating chores with the entire team to keep the camp running smoothly.

You can take a tour of our campsite through this video, created by our volunteers: https://vimeo.com/167249246

YOUR ROLE

- To lead interns, sponsored volunteers and paying volunteers throughout their time with us.  This includes training for the various research projects we will be undertaking, as well as escorting them on leisure activities/excursions around the island.

  • To interact with the island’s resort staff and management on a regular basis, representing and upholding the standards set by LTTW at all times.
  • To communicate with LTTW headquarters, relaying information on a daily basis
  • Supervise the collection, collation and analysis of data from research projects
  • Produce technical reports from said data
  • Interact and host informative talks with resort guests
  • Undertake camp resupply trips from the mainland
  • Coordinate school visits and recycling trips

The requisites for the ideal candidate are:

Essential:

  • BSc degree, or higher, in/related to the field of natural sciences
  • Experience in managing volunteer groups
  • Exceptional social-skills, comfortable interacting with people from many different cultural, social and economic backgrounds
  • Proven leadership skills
  • Highly organised and self-motivated
  • Excellent time-keeping
  • Experience in scientific field-research projects
  • Well-acquainted with the rigours of outdoor living for prolonged periods in a remote, basic, tropical environment
  • Strong swimmer

Desirable:

  • PADI open-water certified, or higher
  • Experience in running workshops with school children
  • Basic book-keeping and stock-keeping skills
  • Good photographer

Lang Tengah Turtle Watch will cover all in-country travel expenses to and from the project site, as well as all food and accommodation whilst on the project site.

If you are keen to apply for this position, please direct your enquiry with accompanying C.V. and covering letter to our Project Coordinator, Bill Matthews:  bill@langtengahturtlewatch.org

We are looking forward to hearing from you!
