The Landscape Conservation Fellow will divide a 12-month service between two geographic areas within the Northern Rockies Region, as part of NPCA’s landscape conservation campaign.
The Landscape Conservation Fellow will be based part of the year out of the Yellowstone Field office in Bozeman (May/June-September), and the remainder at the Glacier Field Office in Whitefish (Sept-May 2012). The Fellow will gain experience working with two other NPCA departments:  working first with NPCA’s Government Affairs staff in Washington D.C.  to help educate decision-makers on NPCA’s landscape campaign priorities, and NPCA’s Center for Park Research in Ft. Collins CO, helping with their landscape campaign priorities (approximately 2 weeks each).

The Landscape Conservation Fellow will first work to support the Yellowstone Field Office’s landscape program on two projects: 1) The Fellow will complete an internal report for NPCA to help us understand the threats and challenges, as well as the opportunities, for NPCA involvement in protection and restoration of Yellowstone’s native fish and their key habitat, especially north and west of the park. 2) The Fellow will serve on YFO’s Yellowstone Pronghorn team, helping to complete a minimum of three fence removal/alteration projects that will result in additional barrier-free movement for Yellowstone pronghorn migration.

The second half of the Fellow’s position will be spent helping to advance NPCA’s Crown of the Continent landscape project, and will be based out of the Glacier Field office in Whitefish, MT. The Fellow will be responsible for developing and completing a research project to gauge how business leaders in the larger Crown region view the importance of the Park and the greater Crown ecosystem to the region’s economy. This work will be documented in an NPCA report that will be used with external audiences to advance our landscape-level community engagement, ally building and outreach work, and will be an important tool for helping us reach the diverse constituencies we need to advance our Crown campaign.

Overall, the Fellow will be responsible for researching and producing two reports for NPCA, will help achieve our goals associated with the Yellowstone Pronghorn program and will help advance NPCA’s landscape conservation goals in our nation’s capital. The Fellowship will not only provide the Fellow with a good deal of substantive and rewarding work, but it will also expose him/her to the many different aspects of NPCA as an organization.
