Working closely with local partners, the Asia-Pacific Programme currently includes a broad range of species and landscape targeted conservation initiatives in Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Lao PDR and Myanmar, and has country programme offices in Phnom Penh, Nanning, Jakarta, Manila and Hanoi. Around 70 projects are being implemented in the region by a team of approximately 200 staff, consultants, volunteers and partner organisations with an annual regional budget of approximately USD 9 million.

Myanmar, the second largest country in mainland Southeast Asia, is home to a wealth of biodiversity. The country still harbours large tracts of forest and many charismatic and unique species, such as the red panda and the Myanmar snub-nosed monkey. The latter was only discovered in 2010 by FFI and partners.

FFI was recently awarded a grant from the European Union (EU) to establish a framework for the long term protection of Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) in the Tanintharyi region in southern Myanmar. This project will contribute to the continued development of the national protected area system, support Myanmar’s national biodiversity action plan, and aims to provide lasting protection of KBAs through protected area designation and innovative protected area management and finance mechanisms. The project will work in partnership with local NGOs in Myanmar and build on current strong links with government departments to secure existing natural resources and environmental services for the sustainable livelihoods of local forest and marine resource dependent communities.

We are seeking a candidate with demonstrable experience in Land Use Planning, Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for conservation to fill the role of Land Use Planning/GIS & Remote Sensing Specialist for the project ‘Securing long-term protection of Key Biodiversity Areas in the Sundaic Sub-region of Myanmar’ (Tanintharyi Region) and wider FFI Myanmar programme. The candidate will be responsible for the coordination of all RS and GIS activities within the project, including terrestrial and coastal habitat mapping, HCVF assessments, and will support government and civil society stakeholders to mainstream HCFV assessments into land use planning and coastal/ marine ecosystem assessments into integrated coastal zone planning. Moreover, the candidate will be the main technical adviser for capacity building to both government and civil society partners and will provide GIS support for protected area gazettement, environmental friendly land use and coastal zone planning and feed into land use policy and conservation decision making.

The successful candidate will play an important role in capacity building and mentorship of FFI staff as well as government and partner agencies, in addition to awareness raising amongst key stakeholders on the importance of integrated conservation planning for the Sundiac region. This is a dynamic position which requires initiative in addition to enthusiasm and a desire to input into developing Myanmar conservation policies.
