Description

Climate Focus is seeking a Land Use Consultant to join our office in Washington, D.C. This is an excellent opportunity to work with a dynamic organization, committed to advancing new research, analysis and implementation of climate science and policy. The successful candidate will work with the Land Use Team on technical projects related to forests and agriculture. Current land use projects include emissions calculations and regional strategies for reducing livestock emissions, building feasible development scenarios in the land sector for achieving the Paris Agreement targets, and accelerating investment for sustainable land use. The position requires interdisciplinary research and analysis on a wide variety of scientific, policy, and econonomic topics, and therefore the candidate will need a solid grounding in environmental science (particularly climate science and ecology), and a good grasp of environmental economics. Climate Focus looks for strong team players who are comfortable working with a diverse group of clients.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to technical projects for government, multilateral, and private sector clients in the area of agriculture, forestry and other land use (AFOLU)
  • Conduct applied research and analysis related to the land sector’s role in climate change: calculate emissions from the land sector, interpret land use and climate modelling outputs, provide insights on land management, planning and policy and have an understanding of ecosystem sciences, resource economics, commodity supply chains and geospatial sciences
  • Carry out an in-depth analysis of mitigation potentials in agricultural systems, with a particular focus on livestock
  • Contribute to the assessment and development of business models for sustainable land use, including estimating climate change mitigation potentials
  • Prepare and publish major reports and studies
  • Build client relationships including travel and participation in international meetings
  • Support the expansion of Climate Focus’s sustainable land use project pipeline and contribute to new project proposals

Candidate Profile

  • Advanced degree (Master’s degree, PhD a bonus) in environmental sciences, environmental or behavioural economics, or similar
  • At least 3 years’ experience in climate change and land-related research (e.g., ecology, forestry, agriculture, REDD+, AFOLU, LULUCF). Experience in livestock science would be an asset
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills
  • Knowledge of statistical methods and climate modelling (RCP & SSP scenarios, methods, projections) used to study climate change mitigation
  • Broad understanding of the practical, scientific, economic, social, and political dimensions of climate change mitigation in the land sector
  • Interested in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary work that combines climate science, economics and policy
  • Excellent organizational skills, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently and work with a fast-paced international team
  • Ability to use own initiative and work well independently and in teams
  • Willingness to travel internationally
  • Fluency in other languages (Spanish, French, Portuguese, etc.) would be an asset
  • Eligible to work in the U.S. (existing work permit or U.S. national)

Time and Remuneration

Full time position with an expected start date in January 2017. The salary will be competitive and commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
