Description

The mission of the WWF Tigers Alive Initiative (TAI) is to help double the wild tiger population to at least 6,000 by 2022. The WWF TAI Unit is a global team working in more than 15 countries (hosted by WWF Malaysia in the Petaling Jaya office close to Kuala Lumpur).

Description of position

Being the Land-use and Development Specialist, you will be responsible for the delivery of set objectives of the WWF TAI strategy related to spatial planning, impact assessment and seizing opportunities to secure tigers in a fast developing region. This is a senior position in the WWF network. You will be required to provide technical advice and leadership on this topic primarily to the needs of the Tigers Alive Initiative but also to the wider WWF network and with external partners where appropriate.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop activities to achieve the set objectives.
  • Identify, develop partnerships and approaches to achieve the objectives.
  • Help identify monitoring and evaluation methods.
  • Develop tools and approaches to achieve landscape-based tiger conservation goals within a land-use planning framework.
  • Identify opportunities for mainstreaming tiger conservation, together with other nature conservation objectives, into the core development plans and priorities of the tiger range countries and related support countries.
  • Provide support to landscape teams, when and where appropriate, in their application of landuse planning tools and approaches.
  • Act as a WWF expert on land-use planning and approaches to large-scale conservation and social and economic development.
  • Prepare and manage 3-years and annual workplans / budget.
  • Facilitate WWF network-wide working group related to the issues relevant to the set objectives.

 

Requirements:

  • A Master’s Degree with related academic and professional background in the field of Nature Conservation and/or Biological Sciences.
  • At least 5 years of working experience in international nature conservation, development or spatial planning.
  • Specialist skills and knowledge of in spatial planning, land-use planning, integration of conservation and development, economic and social sustainability mechanisms.
  • Experience of working on large scale projects/programmes in Asia preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral English skills.
  • Experience working abroad and with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Good interpersonal skills, versatile and able to work in a team as well as independently.
  • Responsive to requests from team members, and an overall positive and energetic attitude.
