Land Stewardship Program (LANDS)

 

DESCRIPTION:

LANDS is a nine member College Sustainability Corps formed by a partnership between the University of Vermont and the Student Conservation Association. Interns work in teams to carry out professional level projects for land trusts, state and federal agencies, towns, and other conservation groups. Projects focus on natural and cultural resources, management plans, GPS and GIS mapping, conservation, sustainable agriculture, and more. Project partners are organizations such as The Nature Conservancy, Vermont Land Trust, and The Green Mountain National Forest.

LANDS is based at University of Vermont in Burlington. It is a nine-week full time program. Time is split approximately 50/50 between fieldwork and office work. Camping for up to five days at a time is required.

As the state's educational, medical, financial and cultural epicenter, Burlington is Vermont's prized city. Vermont offers countless outdoor opportunities such as the Green Mountains, Lake Champlain, and more. In addition, Vermont is close to nearby attractions such as the Adirondacks of New York and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Burlington is 2 hours from French-speaking Quebec, 3.5 from Boston, and 6 from New York City.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Rising Junior, Senior, graduating senior, or graduate
  • Natural Resource Planning, Forestry, Wildlife Studies, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Botany, Community Development, or related majors
  • Availability June through July, M-F ~40hr/week, w/extended overnights to field sites
  • Ability to hike up to 5 miles in steep terrain
  • A positive attitude and leadership skills essential to functioning in team settings
  • A genuine interest in promoting land conservation
