The Land and Operations Supervisor (LOS) is primarily responsible for AMC landholdings and recreation infrastructure in the Maine Woods in addition to special projects as assigned by the MWI Operations Manager. Special projects may include overseeing construction of new buildings, obtaining permits for new facilities or structures from LURC, developing budgets, and working on community related projects, e.g. the 100 Mile Wilderness Dog Sled Race or Cross Country Ski Races. The LOS is responsible for the on-the-ground oversight of AMC landholdings and recreation infrastructure in the MWI Project Area along with supervision of seasonal land and trails staff. 

The LOS works directly for the Operations Manager to: (1) Identify, develop,and maintain recreational sites, facilities, and support infrastructure, (2) Monitor the activities of lease holders and visitors for compliance with AMC land use policies, (3) Monitor forest management activities, (4) Conduct search and rescue operations in the MWI Project Area, (5) Liaise with outside groups, organizations, and individuals wishing to recreate on AMC lands, and (6) Support MWI workshops, education programs, and other services as appropriate to his/her skills andcapabilities. Priorities include maintaining a safe and friendly atmosphere in the backcountry for all guests, volunteers and visitors while supporting the various AMC Recreation, Education and Conservation Programs. Goals and specific objectives are developed annually. Performance in meeting goals and objectives is evaluated periodically during the year. This is a year-round exempt salaried position with excellent benefits. 

Responsibilities 
  • Coordinate with the AMC Road Supervisor and AMC Forest Manager on maintenance of all roads, especially non-timber roads.
  • Work directly with the AMC Director of Trails and Recreation Management in organizing and overseeing the MWI trail building and maintenance program, including the layout and construction of trails, general management of trail crew staff, equipment and maintenance planning, along with operation of heavy equipment as needed.
  • Assist in the training of seasonal Trail Crew and Volunteer trails staff.
  • Coordinate, manage and lead Volunteer work trips on the AMC Maine Woods property.
  • Assist in monitoring the execution of timber harvesting activities, serve as liaison between forest management and recreation uses, and coordinate the delivery of firewood harvested from AMC property to MWI facilities.
  • Monitor and maintain property and easement boundaries.
  • Monitor conditions on the ground for conformity with permits and licenses, LURC and other state standards, along with all AMC/BPL conservation easements.
  • Monitor use of and maintain remote facilities in coordination with AMC facility staff.
  • Plan and manage a program with the Facility Managers to permit AMC guests and visitors boat access on key water bodies of AMC property. Monitor compliance with policies for private boat storage.
  • Recommend and procure as requested all equipment and supplies necessary to support approved land stewardship activities.
  • Support AMC facilities staff by providing information relating to the land stewardship and forestry programs to visitors and overnight guests.
  • Assist in the execution of all winter operations including road plowing, grooming and maintenance of winter ski trails, and transport of winter gear and supplies to the Facilities as needed.
  • Manage all aspects of communication, waste disposal, water supply, and fire response systems on MWI properties.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and control routine expenses based on an approved, annual operating budget under the direction of the MWI Operations Manager.
  • Provide periodic backup support and coverage to facilities operations as requested by the Operations and Facilities Managers.
  • Participate in MWI Recreation and budget planning teams as requested by the Operations Manager.
  • Assist in the recruitment, hiring and training of new MWI staff.
  • Work directly with the Operations Manager and AMC Maine Policy Director on building strong community support for the goals and mission of the AMC MWI Project, representing the AMC at meetings, conferences, job fairs and trade shows as needed.
  • All other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Employment Qualifications
 
  • 3-5 years progressive experience in land operations, conservation, or similar occupation.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Natural Resource Management, Recreation, Outdoor Education, or Hospitality or related field, or equivalent experience, is preferred.
  • Demonstrated supervisory ability with previous experience in conservation, forestry and land management, facility and equipment operations, hospitality and/or other related activities.
  • Knowledge of the AMC MWI property and surrounding 100 Mile Wilderness areas preferred.
  • Exceptional customer service and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to supervise and manage employees to complete a diverse variety of work tasks within flexible work schedules.
  • Ability to hike, bike, paddle, ski, snowshoe and instruct others in these activities as required.
  • Ability to perform work in a remote camp setting and travel safely in the backcountry in all weather conditions, carrying up to 25 lbs of gear.
  • Commitment to the Conservation – Education - Recreation mission of the AMC.
  • Valid Wilderness First Responder certification or the ability to obtain.
  • Valid Maine driver's license with clear driving history.
  • Maine Guide registration or ability to obtain is highly desirable.
  • Ability to use a computer to send and receive email, create Microsoft Word and Excel documents is required. Knowledge of GPS, GIS and mapping software preferred.
  • AMC has zero tolerance for the endangerment of children. All AMC staff working in a facility where children are present will undergo an annual criminal history background check.
