Description

Globally and nationally wildlife is in steep decline. We appear to be reaching critical tipping points around the loss of biodiversity as well as around climate change, both being interlinked. Human society cannot prosper without wildlife and healthy ecosystems.

Kent’s wildlife needs to be restored to much higher levels. We can no longer allow common things to become rare. We can only do this by restoring large-scale habitat from degraded land. Doing this will contribute to solving global problems. But we won’t be able to do this unless we publicly aspire to a higher level of impact and show that we can deliver this.

This exciting and cutting-edge role is predominantly about engaging with farmers to explore how the new streams of natural capital finance (Carbon offsetting, Biodiversity Net Gain and others) could be incorporated into their businesses and explore the challenges and opportunities this presents. This role forms one of Defra’s Test & Trials to see how these new funding streams can compliment the new Environmental Land Management Scheme and give farmers of Kent a real say in how the scheme is developed.

You’ll be joining our team of experienced Farmer Cluster Officers who can share knowledge and experience of engaging with farmers in Kent whilst you delve into this rapidly evolving area of farming business and engine of landscape change. The development of this scheme is a once in a generation opportunity for Kent Wildlife Trust to ensure that farming and wildlife are integrated in a way that delivers for both.

You’ll get the chance to work closely with a number of farmers in Kent, to really get into the detail of Natural Capital financing and what that will look like on an individual farm scale.

As a natural communicator, you’ll be adept at translating complex information into a language that people can understand and building professional relationships as you go. You’ll be working at the forefront of this rapidly developing sector and ensuring that farmers are able to get involved. Passionate about wildlife and farming, you’ll be critical in ensuring that all voices are heard and finding the common ground to enable financially sustainable farm businesses that restore wildlife.

Kent Wildlife Trust is the leading wildlife charity for Kent and Medway, supported by its members and staffed by committed professionals.  Join our team and help us create a Wilder Kent! In return we will inspire you, listen to you, value you, treat you equally and fairly, look after your health and wellbeing and encourage flexibility from day one, enabling you to draw on these benefits to be a better, happier and more productive you.
