The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit national environmental advocacy organization with more than 1.2 million members and online activists.  We have offices in New York, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Beijing.  Our staff includes attorneys, scientists, policy analysts and educators working to protect the environment and human health through advocacy and education.
 
Position Summary:
 
NRDC seeks a Program Assistant to work in our Urban Program in the Los Angeles office. The Urban Program treats cities as environments in need of as much attention as our forests, oceans and wilderness areas.  Currently, the Urban Program focuses on issues of Clean Water Act enforcement, equity in urban planning, endangered species protection, environmental justice and solid waste reduction. The assistant will provide administrative support to four attorneys in the Marine Mammals and Ecosystem programs. The successful candidate must have good problem solving skills and be able to handle administrative tasks such as: coordinating and booking travel, handling phone calls, scheduling meetings, coordinating department meetings, processing expenses and preparing materials.  The candidate should also have legal experience, such as assisting with court filings, or be willing to learn.
 
Essential Functions:
 
  • Providing administrative support to legal staff
  • Proofreading, editing, researching, and preparing legal, scientific, and technical documents, reports, publications, fundraising proposals, etc.
  • Formatting, filing and serving legal documents in state and federal courts
  • Providing member outreach, responding to inquiries from general public and press
  • Preparing expense reports, ordering publications, maps, etc.
  • Maintaining paper and electronic filing systems and databases
  • Making travel arrangements, including transportation, hotel accommodations, vehicle rentals and conference registration
  • Handling incoming and outgoing mail and faxes
  • Scheduling and organizing meetings for project staff
  • Organizing and participating in project conference calls
  • Organize and maintain law library
  • Assisting the receptionist and other program assistants as needed
  • Performing other projects as assigned
