Kroger Sustainability Internship Program

Semester Stipend: $15 - $18 per hour (depending on experience)

Responsibilities

Industry Analysis

  • Undertake a benchmarking study of key retailers, CPGs and other relevant companies on issues of carbon disclosure, risk related to climate change, and carbon management.
  • Develop “best practices” for measurement related to sustainability as identified through various industry associations, competition and non-governmental organizations.

Internal Measurement

  • Create a plan for measuring Kroger’s own progress in the area of sustainability. 
  • Using goals that have already been established and goals that become evident throughout the project, develop a sustainability scorecard for internal and external stakeholders to judge our own progress.  

Reporting

  • Research and create action plan necessary to bring Kroger’s sustainability reporting into GRI Compliance. 
  • Research and create action plan for receiving other external verification such as EPA Climate Leaders, Dow Jones Sustainability Index, and other national sustainability leadership groups. 
  • Special project research: Identifying potential partners for composting programs in various markets.

Communications

  • Develop one-year public affairs plan to communicate company’s leadership and progress on sustainability.  This should include:

                    o    Suggested press releases

                    o    Appearances at national organizations

                    o    Suggestions for online efforts

                    o    In-store communication efforts

This internship will begin in Fall 2010.  The contract will be for a minimum of one semester and may be extended through the Fall of 2011.  Sustainability intern is expected to be in the office a minimum of 15 hours per week.
