Kirstenbosch Scholarship

The above Scholarship was established in 1966 to enable suitably qualified candidates to aid in the preservation of the indigenous flora of South Africa.

The value of this Scholarship is R60 000 per annum plus accommodation at a very minimal fee and will be tenable for a period of one year, but may be extended for a further period.

A certificate will be issued on the satisfactory completion of the Scholarship.

The person to whom an award of a Scholarship is made, shall be bound to enter into an agreement between himself/herself and the Chief Director: Gardens of the South African National Biodiversity Institute, that he/she will, for the full period during which the award of the Scholarship is tenable, be subject to all disciplinary provisions relevant to employees of the institution and work at any garden under the control of the South African National Biodiversity Institute.

Power is being granted to the Chief Director: Gardens and the Curator (acting jointly) to discontinue payments to the person to whom the Scholarship shall be awarded in the event of he/she having breached the provisions of this clause, or in the event of he/she
being considered in the entire discretion of the Chief Director and the Curator
(acting jointly) to be unsuitable for the work concerned.

Who is eligible to apply?

Applications are invited from candidates, possessing the following:

  1. National Diploma Horticulture / National Diploma Nature Conservation / BSc Biological Sciences/Environmental Sciences
  2. At least three years’ experience
  3. South African nationality
  4. A special aptitude for botany and research work connected with indigenous flora
  5. A valid driver’s license

Applicants are advised that the South African National Biodiversity Institute will not bear the cost of their transport to and from their present place of employment / residence and Cape Town at commencement and termination of the Scholarship.
