Description

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

We are offering an exciting opportunity for an experienced, innovative and adaptable individual to coordinate and further develop our Kenya programme. This will entail formal establishment of a ZSL presence in Kenya, coordination and management of ZSL’s existing projects in Kenya including elephant and rhino conservation and development of a marine programme, application of new technologies to monitor biodiversity and working closely with the Kenyan Wildlife Service to help develop and implement the Kenyan national biodiversity strategies and action plans.

The post-holder will report to the London based, Central, East and Southern Africa Programme Manager and will manage a team of staff and volunteers based in Kenya.

Main responsibilities will include project development and grant writing, coordination and staff management and administration, building and maintaining relationships with project collaborators, stakeholders and donors, and external representation and promotion of ZSL and its conservation work.

The post-holder should have a proven track record in conservation project development and management and/or a higher degree in an appropriate subject such as conservation biology, and ideally experience with ground-based monitoring protocols.  Experience with staff management and a good understanding of biodiversity conservation issues in Africa are essential. Experience working in the region is highly desirable.  Excellent written and spoken English, strong organisational, interpersonal and presentation skills, and proven grant-writing and report-writing ability are also required.

The position will be based in Kenya. The position is for an initial one year contract with a start date being as soon as possible.  Salary will be dependent on experience, within the stated range. Terms of reference can be found on the ZSL website (www.zsl.org/jobs).

Applicants should send their CV, and a covering letter detailing relevant experience and skills, by email to ZSL’s HR Department (hr@zsl.org) by Friday 3 May. We regret that we will only be able to contact applicants who have been selected for interview.
