Kendall Science Fellowship in Clean Energy Innovation
Location: Cambridge, MA; Washington, DC; Berkeley or Chicago

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is the leading science-based nonprofit working for a healthy environment and a safer world. UCS combines independent scientific research and citizen action to develop innovative, practical solutions and to secure responsible changes in government policy, corporate practices, and consumer choices. What began as collaboration between students and faculty members at MIT in 1969 is now an alliance of more than 350,000 citizens and scientists that includes people from all walks of life: parents and businesspeople, biologists and physicists, teachers and students.

UCS strives for a future that is free from the threats of global warming and nuclear war and a planet that supports a rich diversity of life. Our specific focus areas include global warming, renewable energy, advanced vehicle technology, nuclear power safety, nuclear weapons and related security issues, preserving the integrity of science, and sustainable agriculture.

The Position:
The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) seeks outstanding candidates for the 2012 Kendall Science Fellowship on expanding U.S. clean energy choices through technology and policy innovation. UCS would like to explore how best to jump-start the next generation of clean technologies needed to drive long-term reductions in emissions from the electricity sector in the U.S., while at the same time driving innovation and lowering the costs of those technologies over time. This would complement our existing work on current clean energy solutions (wind, solar, geothermal, and bioenergy) designed to drive emission and cost reductions in the short and medium-term. In particular we are interested in identifying and promoting best approaches to leverage public and private sector R&D to maximum benefit. The Kendall Fellow’s research will be integral to this work.

One fellowship is available for one-to-two years with a proposed start date of January 2, 2012, or as soon as possible thereafter. Fellows will be based primarily at one of UCS’s offices in Cambridge, MA, Washington DC, Berkeley or Chicago.

General Duties and Responsibilities:
The Kendall Fellow will be expected to pursue a program of research as defined in the final research proposal written in collaboration with the program’s scientists and analysts and approved by the Kendall Science Fellow Advisory Committee. This work will be done in the context of the UCS Climate and Energy program.

Basic Knowledge:
We seek an individual with a strong background in energy sector R&D and technology innovation, with training in science, engineering, business or economics. We are especially encouraging innovative research that fills important gaps in knowledge and includes components that will be relevant to policy makers and engage the general public.

Experience:
Strong preference will be given to candidates with a PhD or other advanced degree in their field. The program is flexible and can accommodate different levels of experience – from early career post-doctoral scientists to senior scholars/scientists.

To Apply:
Interested parties should submit a short application, including a statement of interest (up to 2 pages, including relevant background and experience, a brief description of a research idea, and interest in working with UCS), curriculum vitae, and names and contact information for two references to jobs@ucsusa.org including “Kendall Fellowship” and “Clean Energy Choices,” in the subject line.  Review of applications will begin July 1, 2011. Top candidates, chosen by August 1, 2011, will be asked to co-write a more specific fellowship proposal (7-10 pages) in coordination with UCS staff for submission to the Kendall Science Fellows Program Advisory Committee by September 30, 2011.  Final decisions on the award of this competitive fellowship will be made by November 1, 2011. Questions about the fellowship program should be addressed to Jeanie Taylor, Research and Fellow Program Coordinator, at jtaylor@ucsusa.org.
