Description

Function: Upgrade ocean data assimilation and numerical ocean models for the Mediterranean region, the southern Italian Seas and/or the coastal areas of the southern Italian seas.

Location: CMCC Headquarters in Lecce, Puglia or in Bologna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Environment: The Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change is an Ltd Company (CMCC S.c.a.r.l. http://www.cmcc.it) with research units in Lecce, Bologna, Venice, Capua, Sassari, Milan and Benevento. CMCC aims to promote and coordinate research in climate change and environmental impacts at Italian national level. These activities are carried out in collaboration with Universities, national and international research bodies and the industrial sector. CMCC will start a new action in the framework of operational oceanography, in particular for the production of short-term ocean forecasts, analysis and applications. This position is open under the sponsorship of the Italian project ‘development of TEchnologies for the Situational Sea Awareness’ (TESSA) awarded to CMCC by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research. The TESSA project will develop a set of products and services for Situational Sea Awareness based on new operational oceanography environmental data integrated into advanced technological platforms for users in the maritime sector, tourism and environmental protection.

Main Duties: One of the new appointee should work to implement and validate data assimilation systems in southern Italian Seas (i.e. southern Adriatic, Ionian) sub-regional models and in the Mediterranean scale model. He/she should work with high performance computing facilities of CMCC and should contribute to the operational configuration of the system.

Qualifications: The candidates should have a Ph.D. in physical oceanography, atmospheric sciences, mathematics, physics, informatics, hydraulic engineering or related disciplines. Experience in high performance computing is also desirable. Fluency in English is also required. A minimum 2 years working experience after the Ph.D. is required.

Salary: gross yearly salary (before tax deduction) starting from  €39.000,00

Starting date: January-March 2012.

Length of contract: one-year position renewable up to three years.
