Description

The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is a premier national autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoE&F), Government of India in the field of teaching, training and research. The WII wishes to engage five research personnel [02-Senior Research Fellows (SRFs) and 03-Junior Research Fellows (JRFs)] (Indian National only) for a period of six years for its research project titled “Tiger re-introduction and recovery programme in Panna Tiger Reserve and the landscape complex, Madhya Pradesh: Phase-II”. Applications for the above advertised positions are invited and only short listed candidates will be called for the interview which is likely to be held during the second week of June 2014. The details of the available position along with essential and desirable qualifications, terms and conditions and how to apply are given below:

 

Project Title, details of position and duration

Tiger re-introduction and recovery programme in Panna Tiger Reserve and the landscape complex, Madhya Pradesh: Phase-II.

(02-Senior Research Fellows)

Duration: Six years.

Essential Qualification

Masters’ Degree in Wildlife Science/Botany/Zoology/Forestry/Life Science/Agriculture/ Environmental Sciences/Biological Sciences/Veterinary Science/Social Sciences with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

Prior experiences in (a) Radio-tracking of wild animals; (b) capture-recapture sampling involving camera traps; (c) Occupancy sampling; (d) socio-economic surveys; (e) Spatial analysis using Remote Sensing and GIS tools.

Description of Work

SRF-1: Study movement pattern and behaviour of tigers, both resident ones in the reserve and dispersing ones in the landscape; Provide technical support for tracking team; Develop landscape conservation plan for the area in the meta-population context; Coordinate and report project activities in the field.

SRF-2: Develop spatial database for the landscape and undertake spatial analysis of system dynamics including water resources and services; Map critical wildlife habitat and vulnerability; Socio-economic surveys.

 

The Senior Research Fellows are expected to be highly motivated and have the ability to work in harsh environment on dispersing tigers in the landscape, involving field sampling and satellite/GSM telemetry technologies. Liaison with Forest Officials managing different landscape units on tiger movement and threat potentials. Provide support in data collection, analyses and report preparation on periodic basis on the description above and on the other emerging needs.

(03-Junior Research Fellows)

Duration: Six years.

Essential Qualification

Masters’ Degree in Wildlife Science/Botany/Zoology/Forestry/Life Science/Agriculture/ Environmental Sciences/Biological Sciences/Veterinary Science/Social Sciences with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

Interest and/or experience in (a) distance sampling for prey estimation; (b) Occupancy sampling; (c) study of animal behaviour including feeding habits; (c) capture-recapture sampling involving camera traps; (d) vegetation science; (e) socio-economic surveys; (e) habitat evaluation and monitoring.

Description of Work

JRF 1: Vegetation sampling and mapping for the areas; Quantification of resources availability and quality; Monitoring of vegetation responses in the relocated village sites over spatial and temporal scales;

JRF 2: Deployment of camera traps and undertake capture-recapture sampling across seasons; Occupancy and abundance sampling of co-predators and other related species; Faecal analyses for food habit studies and provide inputs in genetic and hormone analyses;

JRF 3: Line transect sampling in multiple spatial and temporal scales; Prey-predator relationship in terms of behavioural responses; Study human-wildlife interface issues including livestock grazing, resource dependency and disease risk.

 

The junior Research Fellows are expected to be highly motivated and have the ability to work in harsh environment, involving various field and analytical protocols. Provide support in data collection, analyses and report preparation on periodic basis on the description above and on the other emerging needs.

  

GENERAL TERMS & CONDITIONS

  1. Candidate(s) possessing Master’s Degree along with final year mark-sheet will only be eligible to appear for the interview. Candidates appearing in the final year of Masters’ Degree Program will not be eligible to apply for the advertised positions. 

  2. Age of the candidate shall not be more than 28 years for the advertised position of JRF and 32 years for SRF as on Wednesday, 23rd April 2014. Upper age limit for SRF/JRF may be relaxed up to 5 years, as in case of candidates  belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Women and physically handicapped categories.

  3. The fellowship amount for the selected Senior Research Fellow is Rs. 14,000/- consolidated per month and Rs. 18,000/- in case of NET qualified candidate(s) for Research Fellows (UGC/CSIR).

  4. Selected candidate(s) for the advertised position of JRF will be paid a consolidated emolument of Rs. 12,000/- per month as fellowship. In case of NET qualified candidates (UGC/CSIR) for Research Fellows, the selected JRF will be paid consolidated emoluments of Rs. 16,000/- per month.

  5. Duly filled-in applications in the prescribed format should be sent/submitted to the Research Coordinator, Wildlife Institute of India, P.O. Box # 18, Chandrabani, Dehradun – 248 001 (Uttarakhand) on or before 25th April 2014 in an envelope super-scribed by “Application for SRF/JRF in Panna TR – Advt. No. WII/RES/RSCHRS-SELCTION’2014/A.3.15”.

  6. Attested true copies of testimonials of qualifications, experience, date of birth, caste etc. along with copies of mark sheets of all examinations should be attached with application form.

  7. Candidates working in other Organizations/Universities should send their applications through proper channel. However, candidates are advised to ensure timely receipt of application at the Institute by sending an advance copy. In such cases the candidates will have to produce `No Objection Certificate’ at the time of Interview.

  8. Applications received after due date/without enclosures/incomplete in any respect shall be liable to rejection.

  9. The selection of the short-listed candidates will be based on interview likely to be held during the second week of June 2014 at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun. All original documents should be produced at the time of interview.

  10. Short-listed candidate(s) selected for the interview shall be paid one way travel expenses to the candidates in General Category and both ways expenses to the candidates in SC/ST/OBC category, on producing the proof of journey performed. The expenses will be limited to second-class rail/bus fare by the shortest route from his/her place of residence to Dehra Dun.

  11. Canvassing in any form is liable to rejection of the candidature.
