to engage Research Fellows

The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is a premier national autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India, in the field of teaching, training and research. The WII wishes to engage 14 research personnel viz., 01–Junior Research Fellow, 06–Project Fellows, 01–Project Associate, 03–Project Assistants, 01–Research Associate and 02–Project Biologists (Indian national only) through a walk-in-interview on Monday, 20th April 2015. The details of the available positions along with essential and desirable qualifications, terms and conditions and how to apply are given below:

Project Title, details of position and duration

Evaluation of prey availability and habitat suitability for tiger and its ranging patterns in Sanjay Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh.

(01 – Junior Research Fellow)

Duration: Two years

Essential Qualification

Masters’ Degree in Wildlife Science/Forestry/Forest Management/Environmental Science/Life Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

Experience in animal abundance estimation, carnivore sign surveys, camera trapping, radio-telemetry and knowledge in statistics and GIS.

Description of Work

To evaluate the prey availability and habitat suitability for tiger and its ranging patterns using radio-telemetry in Sanjay Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh.

Project Title, details of position and duration

Tiger Reintroduction and Recovery Programme in Panna Tiger Reserve and the Landscape Complex, Madhya Pradesh: Phase II

(04 – Project Fellows)

Duration: Five Years

Essential Qualification

Masters degree in Wildlife Science/Botany/Zoology/Forestry/Life Science/Agriculture/ Environmental Sciences/Biological Sciences/Veterinary Science/Geography/Geo-informatics/Social Sciences and Statistics with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

Prior experiences in (a) Radio-tracking of wild animals and behavioral sampling; (b) Capture-recapture sampling involving camera traps; (c) Line-transect sampling; (d) Vegetation quantification and nutritional analysis; (e) Spatial analysis using Remote Sensing and GIS tools; (f) Experience in genetics and endocrinology.

Description of Work

Project Fellow-1: Ecology and behavior of reintroduced tiger and its offspring. Monitoring of tiger based on VHF/GPS and Satellite telemetry tools; Study movement pattern and behavior of tigers including vocalization and food habits; Undertake landscape permeability and spatial prioritization analyses; Develop landscape conservation action plan.

Project Fellow-2: Modeling prey-predator relationship. Occupancy estimation of tiger, co-predators and other relevant species; Deployment of camera traps and estimation of population parameters across seasons; Provide technical support to Forest Department for enhancing the capacity of Phase IV monitoring and reporting, and for dealing with crisis situation in field.

Project Fellow-3: Study of ungulate-vegetation relationship. Line transect sampling in multiple spatial and temporal scales; Quantification of forage availability and quality; Evaluation of vegetation responses in the relocated village sites over spatial and temporal scales; Study human-wildlife interface issues including livestock grazing and resource use by people; Map hydrological regime and dynamics of water resources and services including forest products.

Project Fellow-4: Endocrinology and population viability analysis. Biological sample collection and preservation; DNA extraction and conservation genetics; Hormone analysis for profiling of animals for understanding physiological stress and reproductive health; Demographic analysis. Management of database and periodic report compilation including mapping of current events.

Project Title, details of position and duration

Ecology and conservation of sea turtles off the coast of Sindhudurg, Maharashtra.

(01 – Project Fellow)

Duration : Seventeen months (April 2015 to August 2016)

Essential Qualification

Masters’ Degree in Wildlife Science/Zoology/Botany/Life Science/ Environmental Sciences/Biological Sciences with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

Candidates with prior experience of working in coastal and marine ecosystems, or have carried out field surveys involving population estimation and or ecological studies of aquatic species. And, have knowledge of statistics and GIS.

Description of Work

This study will involve satellite tracking sea turtles off the coast of Sindhudurg, Maharashtra to identify high use areas in the near-shore waters, and to track the migratory routes, which is crucial for their protection and effective management. The researcher is expected to be highly motivated and have the ability to work in harsh environments that will include regular boat based surveys in the near-shore waters off the Maharashtra coast.

Project Title, details of position and duration

Pattern of biomass production by wetlands and its use by wild ungulates in Kaziranga landscape.

(01 – Project Fellow)

Duration : 9 months

Essential Qualification

Master’s degree in Botany/Zoology/Forestry/Life Science/Experimental Biology/ Environmental Sciences/Biological Sciences/Biodiversity and Conservation/Wildlife Science or any subject relevant to Wildlife Sciences) or A.I.F.C. or M.V.Sc. or M.Sc. Agriculture degree from a recognised University with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.

Desirable Qualification

Work experience on food habit study of large herbivores using micro-histological analysis. Work experience in protected areas of North-east India.

Description of Work

Examine food habit of large herbivores. Monitoring of large herbivore population, habitat use and activity pattern. Social survey of local communities to quantify the amount of biomass extracted and dependency on natural resources. Writing of study report.

Project Title, details of position and duration

Assessment and monitoring of climate change effects on wildlife species and ecosystems for developing adaptation and mitigation strategies in the Indian Himalayan region.

(01 – Project Associate)

Duration: Five years

Essential Qualification

Ph.D. in Life Sciences/Environmental Sciences/Forestry/Sociology/Anthropology/Mass Communication or related fields OR Three years of research, teaching, design and development experience after M.Tech./M.E.

Desirable Qualification

Proven skills in popular science writing, outreach activities, mass communication, reports, brochures, CDs, newspaper clippings, photographs, documentaries other publications/ visible output.  At least one research publication in Science Citation Indexed (SCI) journal. Proficiency in use of Information and Communication Tools.

Description of Work

Required to perform the role as ‘communication specialist’ of the project.  Preparation of popular/semi scientific outputs based on scientific findings of the project, policy briefs, reports and brochures etc.  Update content of the project website on regular basis and also execute and monitor the ‘wildlife watch’ programme.  Support during conduct of workshops, meetings and media interaction. Interaction with local communities residing in project sites.

Experience/interest in field data collection for biological taxa and socioeconomic survey.

Required to assist in field research at various locations in the Indian Himalayan Region.

(01 – Project Assistant)

Duration: Five years

Masters’ Degree in Life Sciences/Forestry/Environmental Sciences/Computer Application/Sociology/Economics/Mass communication OR Graduate/Post Graduate degree with diploma in Computer Application.

Desirable Qualification

Experience in data entry, file maintenance, communications and office related works.

Description of Work

Required to assist in routine office work, word processing, data entry, file maintenance, communication etc. Work station will be at New Delhi.

Project Title, details of position and duration

Population genetic structure and gene flow in brown bear (Ursus arctos     isabellinus) populations in India (Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and        Uttarakhand) and assess extent of gene flow between populations of India and      Pakistan: Conservation and Forensic Implications.

(01 – Research Associate)

Essential Qualification

Ph. D. degree in Ph.D. in Wildlife Science/Biological Sciences/Environmental Sciences from a recognized university.

Desirable Qualification

Experience in wildlife areas specially in occupancy surveys, population estimation, GIS, knowledge of different software used in wildlife science like Distance, Capture, Mark etc.

Description of Work

Required to visit Brown areas of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand for collection of field data, analysis and provide other inputs in the project objectives.

 (02 – Project  Biologists)

Duration: Up to 31.12.2015 (likely to be extended)

Essential Qualification

Project Biologist–1: Masters’ Degree in Life Sciences/Botany/Zoology/Wildlife Science/Forestry/Environmental Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

Field research experience on floral surveys/inventories and Vegetation quantification studies in western Himalaya. Only candidates with strong physical and mental abilities and a keen desire to carryout arduous field work in the remote and rugged high altitudes of Uttarakhand Himalaya under extreme cold or rainy conditions with minimal logistic support may apply.

Description of Work

  • Project Biologist shall be responsible to carry out specific tasks/activities relevant to project components as assigned and submit periodic reports on such tasks.

  • Field data collection, data analysis, synthesis, and report writing.

  • To assist Task Supervisors/Project Coordinator/Nodal officer in conduct of meetings, field training, workshops and conferences as envisaged in the project. 

  • Prepare scientific papers, reports and presentations and dissemination material/ project related outreach activities.

  • Any other assignment by Project Authorities.

Research experience on climate predictive models through RS & GIS, specific to Western Himalayan flora and fauna. Only candidates with strong physical and mental abilities and a keen desire to carryout arduous field work in the remote and rugged high altitudes of Uttarakhand Himalaya under extreme cold or rainy conditions with minimal logistic support may apply.

  3. Candidates appearing for the advertised positions of Project Fellow/Project Associate/Project Assistant/ Research Associate/Project Biologist should posses the Essential Qualification as per the details given against each position.

5. Selected candidate(s) will be engaged initially for a period mentioned against each advertised position. Subsequently his/her tenure may be extended depending upon the exigencies of work at sole discretion of the Institute and satisfactory performance of the candidate.

6. Candidate(s) may be allowed hostel accommodation at the institute, as per availability. Where the hostel accommodation is not possible, house rent allowance (HRA) will be paid as per the rules of the Institute. Other allowances and benefits to the research personnel would be admissible as per the rules.

7. The selection of the candidate(s) will be based on the interview to be held on Monday, 20th April 2015 at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun. The registrations of the candidates for the advertised positions will be done from 09:00 to 10:00hrs on 20th April 2015 at WII. Late entrants after the stipulated time as mentioned above for registration will not be entertained, in any case.

9. Candidate(s) should bring the duly filled-in applications with attested true copies of testimonials   of educational qualifications, research experience, extra-curricular activities, date of birth etc., along with copies of mark sheets of all examinations.
