The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an inter-governmental organisation mandated with the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy. At present, IRENA has 141 Members (140 States and the European Union) that acceded to its Statute, and 31 additional States in the process of accession and actively engaged. IRENA supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future, and serves as the principal platform for international cooperation, a centre of excellence, and a repository of policy, technology, resource and financial knowledge on renewable energy. The Agency implements its mandate with the view to sustainable development, increased energy security and low-carbon economic growth and prosperity.

The purpose of the Junior Professional Associates Programme is to enable junior talented and promising university graduates and post graduates to gain first-hand experience in the work of IRENA and a deeper insight into the role of the Agency in promoting the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy. The programme offers valuable exposure to IRENA’s main activities and programmatic areas. On occasion, there are also opportunities in support areas such as administration, finance, human resources and public information. The Agency will also benefit from gaining new and motivated members of staff, bringing new skills and perspectives.

The Junior Professional Associate will contribute to two activities of IRENA:

  • The IRENA Renewable Energy Learning Platform (IRELP) is a global reference platform for renewable energy education. Comprising of four databases and with more than 240,000 followers, the platform has established a large following, including through social media networks.  IRELP is also providing access to renewable energy job resources and internship opportunities. Meanwhile the IRELP online community is being developed as a forum for wider engagement of IRENA with the public.
  • The IRENA Coalition for Action is a network of companies, industry associations NGOs and other organisations and stakeholders, working in partnership to connect, coordinate, share and publish objective facts and knowledge about renewable energy. Its objective is to engage with stakeholders, including the private sector and civil society, and develop the best form of communication and messaging tailored to mobilise and align the major renewable energy entities and stakeholders. The network was established in January 2014.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Senior Programme Officer, Knowledge Management, the Junior Professional Associate will will perform the following duties:

IRELP programme

  • Monitors and updates databases, identifies courses, validates their relevance, quality and consistency and removes outdated information;
  • Identifies relevant data sources and potential partners; arranges meetings and maintains contact information records;
  • Assists in the establishment and operation of strategic partnerships;
  • Tracks project site traffic and maintains records of project impact and statistics;
  • Monitors and moderates the IRENA Community; implements communications and outreach plan including social media campaign/updates;
  • Proposes and implements improvements to the database and website structures;

Coalition for Action programme

  • Prepares, coordinates and drafts content for (social) media campaigns;
  • Moderates campaign communications:
  • Assists in the further development of coordinated communications mechanisms and tools for targeting media and other communicators engaged in the energy sector dialogue;
  • Identifies new strategic partners and maintains partnerships:
  • Identifies, collects, classifies and validates renewable energy data from Coalition partners and external sources, in order to grow and maintain the Coalition’s knowledge bank;
  • Assists in developing and maintaining the web portal for the Coalition for Action;

Performs any other duties as required.

Competencies

Professionalism: Possesses previous experience in executing communication campaigns, outreach activities and social media campaigns is essential. Has documented knowledge about renewable energy and experience in communicating about in renewable energy technology, markets and policies. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations.

Qualifications

Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in information and communication technologies, database management, web management or a related field or a first-level university degree with at least two years of relevant work experience acquired after completion of the required degree;

Experience/Skills: Quantitative and qualitative research and analytical skills, with experience in renewable energy; Be familiar with statistical analysis, and creation and maintenance of large databases; Knowledge of stakeholders in the field of renewable energy technology, policy and financing; Understanding of Information and Communication Techonology (ICT) and content management systems (CMS); Good command of MS Office with emphasis on Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint, and proficiency in using social media.

Language: Excellent command of written and spoken English is required.  Knowledge of other languages is desirable.

1 Amount of monthly lump-sum depends on qualifications and years of relevant work experience. In addition: a monthly accommodation allowance (USD 1,600); relocation grant upon arrival/separation if relocation involved (USD 1,200); installation grant if relocation involved (USD 1,300); health insurance; other entitlements as applicable.
