Description

The Junior Professional (JP) will be an integral part of the IUCN’s Programme on Business and Biodiversity (BBP), which comprises a small team of staff based at IUCN Headquarters in Gland, Switzerland and in several other outposted offices.

The IUCN Business and Biodiversity Programme was established in 2003 to influence and support private partners in addressing environmental and social issues. The Programme's work is led by a Business Engagement Strategy, approved by the IUCN Council, to engage the business sectors that have a significant impact on natural resources and livelihoods. These include: large 'footprint' industries such as mining and oil and gas; biodiversity-dependent industries including fishing, agriculture and forestry; and, financial services and “green” enterprises such as organic farming, renewable energy and nature-based tourism.
Globally, the Business and Biodiversity Programme focuses on three key areas of work to drive the changes required to deliver on IUCN’s global conservation and sustainable development goals. These include:
• Valuing biodiversity;
• Promoting biodiversity net gain;
• Investing in nature.
The JP will provide support to the BBP team in order to help the team design, develop and implement a portfolio of projects that advance due processes, recognize, respect and reinforce the role of business in nature conservation and facilitate the delivery of tangible “on the ground” benefits. In particular, he/she will provide assistance to colleagues through background research and information analysis and synthesis, support for organizing various events and contribution towards effective communication, outreach and engagement activities aimed at ensuring that IUCN’s work with business is coordinated and delivered effectively.

The project portfolio is jointly designed with IUCN members as well as expert Commissions, Regional Offices, Global Thematic Units and local partners to translate national and international ambition and commitments associated with the business sector into substantive impact.
The three principle projects that the JP will support are:
- The IUCN’s Western Gray Whale Advisory Panel (WGWAP);
- The IUCN’s BioBiz Exchange;
- The Initiative on mitigating biodiversity impacts in the renewable energy sector.
