Description

SEI is seeking a junior energy systems researcher that will conduct energy modelling and planning in the context of research projects on low carbon transitions. The work is initially focused on research in an interdisciplinary EU research project PATHWAYS doing quantitative scenarios for heat energy supply and demand in Sweden and other European countries. The first task is to build a model of Sweden’s current heat system based on data gathered in ongoing case study work, and quantify a set of two scenarios representing different plausible development trajectories. In addition, an early task is to collaborate with international partners and assess the feasibility of conduct the same analysis for two additional countries, Germany and UK. The successful candidate is also expected to engage in a growing portfolio of energy related project at SEI. Criteria of importance are ability to work in a knowledge-intense and interdisciplinary organization, capability in interacting with industry and partners. The applicant can be entry level but previous modelling experience will be highly valued.

 

Duties and responsibilities

Specifically, the successful applicants will be expected to, among other tasks:
• In collaboration with energy and policy researchers develop forward looking and comparative energy based on political goals and existing socio-technical data on the trends in the energy systems in the three countries;
• Conduct analysis of energy use, GHG emission reductions, and costs, and climate goals;
• Contribute to, and with time lead on, the preparation of reports, and peer-reviewed articles and other publications from the projects;
• Interact internally and externally with international partner and modelling teams working other modelling techniques including global integrated assessment models;
• Contribute to communication and outreach activities of projects, including preparation of policy briefs, and participate in internal and external meetings and conferences.

 

Essential Qualifications:

• Advance degree (Masters) in energy, environmental analysis, engineering, natural sciences, or interdisciplinary with energy qualifications;
• Experience of modelling and quantitative energy systems analysis
• Fluency in spoken and written English;
• Ability to work in projects with multiple scientific disciplines.

 

Desirable Attributes

• Experience of using modelling and/or planning tools and techniques such as LEAP, GAMS, Matlab, or other programming languages used to implementing energy system modelling techniques;
• Education or working experience geared at interdisciplinary analysis, e.g., governance analysis or climate policy;
• International experience such as work, student exchanges or collaboration with EU or other international research in relevant field.
