CEH’s research underpins our understanding of the environment and the processes that support life on Earth. We undertake large-scale monitoring and experimentation to detect and predict the causes and consequences of environmental change. Our science is managed and delivered through integrated science. Study of the abundance and distribution of plants, and their interactions with their environment are central to this. We are looking for a data analyst to work within a team of 15 ecologists working within the Biological Records Centre (BRC - http://www.brc.ac.uk). BRC is the national focus for research on the distribution of non-marine wildlife in the British Isles. BRC is a major partner in the National Biodiversity Network, holding and processing data on behalf of data providers, and posting most of our data on the NBN Atlas https://nbnatlas.org. We are seeking a data analyst within BRC to assist with the collation, analysis and presentation of biodiversity data. Apprenticeship Opportunity The post holder will be supported to complete a level 4 Data Analyst higher apprenticeship, with the University of Bedfordshire. This would be a great opportunity for someone who has completed their A-levels and would like to continue studying alongside getting hands-on experience in the working world, in the arena of environmental sciences. Alternatively for someone looking for a career change or someone looking to return to the workplace following a break. Main duties The post will involve the preparation and collation of data, ensuring that data is dealt with accurately and efficiently. The data analyst apprentice will use programs such as Excel, mapping software (e.g. ArcGIS) and a number of database systems e.g. Access, Oracle and MySQL to provide data exports in various formats for: scientific analysis, data summaries for internal and external users, and outputs for use in publications such as books or scientific journals. The role will provide training in the use of SQL and database design and development, and other packages as required for the projects undertaken during the apprenticeship.
