The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a leading international conservation, science and education charity. Role Profile:

ZSL is seeking a pro-active and adaptable Junior Conservation Biologist to provide technical support in the development and implementation of aquatic field research and conservation initiatives within the ZSL Marine & Freshwater Group.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Project delivery within the Estuaries and Wetlands Conservation Programme focussing on project planning, implementation, analysis and interpretation of results. This will involve aquatic survey work in the field and will include the production of technical reports for funders and partner organisations including government agencies.
  • Support staff within the programme in the production of funding proposals.
  • Assist with administrative support for the programme where required.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of effective working relationships with sponsors and donors in order to generate and secure funding for the Estuaries and Wetlands Conservation Programme.
 

Person Specification:

The Ideal Candidate will:

  • Have a degree in a relevant subject, such as aquatic/marine biology, or equivalent qualification or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Have previous experience working in aquatic field conditions implementing science-based projects.
  • Have sound understanding of aquatic conservation biology and conservation project design.
  • Have an understanding of the current challenges facing marine, estuarine and freshwater specific conservation.
  • Be able to work independently in demanding field conditions in close proximity to water, and have an aptitude both for managing field teams and for fostering relationships with institutional partners.
  • Have excellent written / oral communication and presentation skills,
  • Have knowledge and awareness of a broad range of field research techniques.
  • Have advanced skills in using MS office packages, specifically Excel and PowerPoint and in data analysis tools such as statistical, GIS and database software.

Please note: This is a full-time, one year fixed-term contract position based at London Zoo, Regents Park offices, however there may be a need to travel within the UK and possibly internationally outside normal working hours.  ZSL accepts and welcomes all applications for this position however; the position would be ideal for a conservation biologist graduate with a strong interest in Estuaries and Wetlands field research. You will have exposure to a variety of departments and people who have a passion for Animal Conservation.
