Chumbe Island Coral Park Ltd. (CHICOP) is based in Zanzibar/Tanzania, and has established and now manages Chumbe Island as an award-winning private Marine Protected Area (MPA) that has become renowned as the first financially independent and self-sustaining MPA in East Africa. This is made viable through an eco-lodge utilizing commercial principles with not for profit objectives to generate self-financing of the park. The park includes a protected reef sanctuary and forest reserve. There is also a Visitors' centre used for Chumbe's Environmental Education programs. Ecotourism supports park management, research and education programs for local schools.

Job description:

The Island Manager is based on Chumbe Island which is located 12km southeast from Stone Town, and reports to the Project Manager.  He/she is fully responsible for all island departments and activities revolving around the eco-lodge, consisting of 7 individual eco-bungalows and an educational Visitor’s Centre, hosting up to 16 guests at any given time.  He/she should be a strong leader, trustworthy with experience in eco-tourism and environmental conservation (marine and forest).  Managing a team of 24 Tanzanian employees, the Island Manager is expected to:

  • Oversee all departmental managers (Conservation, Education & Lodge) in their daily island based work;
  • Provide on-site support to the Head Ranger and/or Conservation Manager in all ranger, research, monitoring and student activities.
  • Oversee all island-based activities and administration and prepare monthly inventory and stock taking, monthly departmental reports and budgets;
  • Liaise with Project Manager and Financial Controller to ensure all financial systems are streamlined and in place and conduct regular systems inspections;
  • Oversee and be responsible for all guest payments and handling of money, guest invoices and valuables on the island;
  • Welcome and tend to guests’ needs and requests and ensure that they are comfortable and happy at all times;
  • Assist with hosting and organizing logistics for educational school trips, journalists, film crew or other media and VIP visits to the island, including official governmental representatives;
  • Oversee technical issues in maintenance of eco-buildings and equipment (solar energy, water, sanitation) and supervise annual maintenance season;
  • Assist Project Manager and/or General Administrative Assistant with island staff recruitment;
  • Conduct regular spot checking and quality control;
  • Promote continuous relevant skill-based training of staff;
  • Keep up to date with health and safety issues;

Qualifications needed:

  • Bachelors degree essential, Masters degree preferred in the field of business and/or development and / or business administration, with preference towards environmental or eco-tourism business development/ administration
  • Experience in business operations including (stock take, inventory, supplies) and financial management experience essential;
  • Minimum 3 years experience working in ecotourism, preferably in East Africa
  • Personnel management and supervisory experience and skills.
  • Experience in island conservation related issues, preferably a good understanding of marine ecology and coral conservation issues. 
  • Experience in educational development, teaching practice or capacity-building.
  • Experience of working within an Islamic society
  • Understanding of technical issues in maintenance of buildings and equipment (solar energy, water, sanitation) highly desired.
  • An organized, pragmatic, problem solving mind.
  • Strong communication, public relation, leadership skills required and keen interest in sustainable management.
  • Enthusiasm, energy, flexibility and initiative. Sense of humour and commitment to the project mission.

Fluent in written and spoken English, working knowledge of Kiswahili and more international languages are an advantage.

Please note: Zanzibar is an inexpensive location to live, and the salary offered is set at a level to enable a goods and services differential (disposable income level) commensurate with an equivalent post of this seniority under European standards.
