The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking an Iowa State Grassroots Coordinator for its State Affairs Division.  The main responsibility of this position is to expand The HSUS’s network of grassroots advocates and coalition members working to end the use of gestation crates in pork production.  Other duties include, but are not limited to: train advocates throughout the state on effective animal advocacy, outreach and lobbying; manage and coordinate the work of Iowa’s HSUS State Agricultural Advisory Council; recruit and develop volunteers to serve as County Coordinators in every county and oversee their efforts; assist with field outreach to support litigation, research and investigations on gestation crate confinement; help local food retailers switch from gestation crate pork to pork from independent farmers who don’t use confinement methods.  Bachelor’s degree or job related equivalent along with two to four years experience in grassroots organizing, coalition building and advocacy highly desired.  Experience working in rural communities and knowledge of the legislative process and practices preferred.  Candidate must have strong organizational, oral and written communication skills and excellent public speaking skills.  Must be willing to work outside standard business hours and assist in the field for various animal-related activities.
