EIA has been at the forefront of efforts to combat environmental crime since 1984. The Tiger Campaign has been a major part of EIA’s work since 1996, and a major theme of the work is to protect the world’s remaining tigers (and other Asian big cats) by addressing the international illegal trade in their parts and derivatives and tiger farming.. 

Purpose of position. 

This position is based in the EIA London office. The Investigator will work within the Tiger Team, and with the Investigations Manager in formulating, planning and executing field investigations primarily into international illegal trade in tigers, other Asian big cats, and other wildlife.   

Principal activities will include: trade data research, analysis of patterns of trafficking routes and methodologies, monitoring of campaign-related news and government notifications, investigation planning, production of internal reports, contribution to production of external publications, participation in campaign and organisational strategic planning. This position will be line managed by the Campaign Leader and project managed by the Investigation Manager 

Main Responsibilities 

  • Carry out research and analysis of trade incidents, trafficking hotspots, routes and methods, and patterns of demand using databases and other information sources
  • Assist in identifying investigative opportunities to enable EIA to meet its goals in relation to tiger and other wildlife crime
  • Develop investigation plans with relevant staff in EIA’s Tiger Campaign team
  • Undertake on-site investigations as part of an EIA team
  • Work effectively with EIA's NGO partners in key countries
  • Ensure that security and safety issues are embedded in investigation plans
  • Provide a full written report of all field trips
  • Gather visual evidence during field trips
  • Contribute to the production of external publications and short films
  • Develop an effective network of contacts 

Essential Requirements 

  • Two years’ experience in a campaigning organisation, journalism, business research or similar field
  • Ability to travel at short notice, including to potentially challenging environments
  • Strong English communications skills, especially writing
  • Fluent in Mandarin Chinese
  • Demonstrable research skills
  • Experience of camera work (film and/or photography)
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Affinity with the aims of EIA
  • Legal right to work in the UK 

Desirable Skills 

  • Experience of working with people from a variety of cultures and countries
  • Previous experience of field investigations
  • Knowledge of tiger conservation issues
  • Knowledge of international commerce, especially in East Asia    

Terms and Conditions 

Salary: Grade 2 at EIA

Location: London, UK (with overseas travel required)
