Job Title: Interpretation and Display Co-ordinator Responsible to: CAT management and permanent staff body Responsible for: Line management of Display Development Technician and Display LTV’s Working Hours: 40 (Post will require working some weekends and school holidays) Salary: £16,653 p.a. Job summary: The display co-ordinator is a key part of CAT’s visitor centre team, whose duty is to ensure that displays and interpretation at CAT are of the highest standard. The display co-ordinator will also lead CAT’s display group, which includes the duty maintenance manager, visitor centre marketing manager, the development director, an information officer, an education officer, an engineer, a researcher, a fundraiser and a graphic designer. This group is responsible for the overall development of CAT's interpretation and display content. The display co-ordinator is responsible for identifying and implementing display requirements in order to fulfil the strategic objectives of the organisation. Maintenance and upgrading of existing displays will form a part of this role. New displays will usually require the development of a fund-raising package for materials, CAT staff time and contractors. The post also requires assisting the visitor centre maintenance team on occasion which entails interaction with the public. On successful completion of a six month probationary period the appointee will be confirmed in post as a permanent member of staff and will be expected to take part in the co-operative management structure of CAT. Responsibilities: Visitor Centre Interpretation and Displays:In liaison with the Display Group:· To review and implement a long-term display strategy.· To identify display needs and requirements of CAT’s visitor centre. · To prioritise and undertake existing displays maintenance tasks including the maintenance and updating of signage. To decommission old, out of date displays and ensure sensible storage or disposal.· To research and write display material (in conjunction or consultation with technical members of CAT staff, gardeners, engineers etc as appropriate). · To work with the duty maintenance manager, gardeners, engineers and on occasion contractors to design and develop interactive displays. · To work with the graphics department on the design and actualisation of interpretation panels.· To co-ordinate regular display group meetings.· To take forward the work of the display group between meetings.· General:· Management of new display projects at CAT.· Consultation with other departments at CAT in order to identify key display requirements of CAT.· To ensure, in liaison with the duty maintenance manager, that any volunteers, staff and contractors involved in display projects receive adequate supervision and training.· To assist other departments in creating ad-hoc instant information signs as needed in liason with the graphics department (including signs for themed special events).· To keep up-to-date with developments in the world of interpretation, particularly interactive displays. · To analyse visitor feedback (in liason with the visitor centre marketing manager) on displays/interpretation in order to monitor performance/effectiveness of displays.· To work with the fundraising department to identify relevant fundraising opportunities, provide information needed to write proposals, manage and monitor the project budget and make claims on successful grant applications. · To set, manage and monitor a basic display budget.· To comply with CAT’s Health & Safety Policy in all aspects of work as well as all other relevant policies. Other:· To participate in the co-operative style management of the organisation.· To undertake other co-operative duties as required by the organisation e.g. rotas, guided tours. Person Specification Essential:· Display design and interpretation experience.· Excellent communication skills and a positive and enthusiastic disposition - able to influence, persuade, motivate and negotiate diplomatically.· Excellent written communication skills- able to write well in order to inspire.· Ability to develop a strategic approach to display development.· Relevant practical experience including practical design and maintenance skills and tool use· Excellent organisational skills - able to organise self and others and project manage as necessary.· Ability to meet deadlines.· Ability to understand and present scientific concepts and a knowledge of renewable technology and environmental issues.· Good visual awareness.· Computer literacy. · Experience of using graphics/pictures/images to give a message.· Understanding of the role of interpretation within an educational/tourist visitor centre.· Learning - able to use new information in order to keep up-to-date on CAT's work and consistently communicate the CAT message.· Research - experienced in researching and gathering information.· Budgeting/financial skills - in order to forecast and monitor budgets.· Team working skills.· Adaptable approach - ability to liaise between various departments to meet differing display requirements - but able to use own initiative where necessary.· Supervision skills - able to supervise as required.· Practical experience of environmental building techniques and materials.· Presentable appearance as appropriate.· To line manage and support the displays development technician, Display LTV’s and other staff as required.
