The Roots & Shoots program started in 1991 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and has spread to more than 100 countries. Within Tanzania, Roots & Shoots is in more than 15 regions and with hundreds of clubs in primary and secondary schools. We engage youth to show care and concern for the environment, the human community and animals through action-oriented projects. The Roots & Shoots International Intern Coordinator works with local staff to train and support a small number of interns from around the world who come to help the program in Tanzania. Typically 8-10 interns come over the course of a year with each staying from 6-8 months.
Responsibilities include:
Working with the Conservation Education Manager of the Jane Goodall Institute U.S.A. to coordinate selection and scheduling of interns.
Living with volunteers and assisting with the management of the intern house in Dar es Salaam.
Working with Tanzanian staff to coordinate training for interns when they arrive in country, including cultural sensitivity training, orientation to Dar es Salaam and orientation to the Roots & Shoots program
Supporting interns who are placed in regions outside Dar es Salaam and helping to train local volunteers who are counterparts in the regions. Involves travel to Moshi / Arusha and possibly other regions.
Working together with local staff and volunteers on special events, projects and ongoing support of Roots & Shoots clubs in Dar es Salaam and other regions.
Experience / Qualifications:
The ideal volunteer coordinator will be mature, flexible, self-motivated, adapt to new environments easily, culturally sensitive, have a sense of humor, able to get along with all types of people, and willing to do whatever tasks need to be done
Experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred: volunteer management, community development, teaching, environmental science, youth development
Experience living and working in a developing country required; experience working in East Africa especially Tanzania strongly preferred
Must be 24 years of age or older
Fluency in Kiswahili preferred
Terms: Lodging and a living stipend will be provided. The coordinator will be responsible for his/her own medical insurance and international travel. All costs associated with the position such as local travel, communication, and residence permit will be covered.
