Description

Nature's Gift Permaculture Centre is in its third year as a permaculture demonstration, training & education centre located on a 650-hectare farm on the outskirts of Lilongwe, Malawi. We are currently seeking an Intern to assist our team in creating and maintaining our demonstration centre which offers options for community-based environment, food and nutrition security.

The Sustainable Agriculture Intern will focus his/her efforts in the two main areas of design and maintenance and will work toward the following tasks:

  • Become acquainted with our current processes, systems and organizational culture
  • Work alongside the Operations Manager to generate & implement a management plan for each area of the Centre; staple field, residential garden, ‘memo’ food forest, Kusamala market garden, wood-lots, and nurseries.
  • Help manage fertilizer systems—compost production, fodder banks, chickens, etc.
  • Assist the implementation team with daily tasks in running the Centre.

The successful candidate will:

  • Be a self starter who is willing / able to work independently and as an effective member of a multicultural team.
  • Have experience working in a growing organization, preferably with a strict code of social responsibility.
  • Have experience in agro-ecology/permaculture/sustainable agriculture or the like

NGP can offer the successful candidate:

  • Flexibility in work schedule as per demands of internship and travel desires
  • Rustic accommodation within walking distance of Kumbali Country Lodge
  • Ability to participate in our training courses (Permaculture Design Certificate, earth building, etc.)
  • Availability of free, organic vegetarian food as well as space for a garden

This is a great opportunity for someone seeking “on the ground” experience in true sustainable development. We ask applicants to be creative and flexible as life in Malawi varies greatly from day to day.

This internship has the potential to turn into a full-time, paid opportunity for the right candidate. The job description may vary and grow over time to include policy work in food security, grant writing, and project management. Interested candidates with more agriculture experience will be given preference.

Application are accpeted on a rolling basis, this position will be open until filled.

We also offer a general internship program and a volunteer program
