Job/Research Summary  

NREL has an opening for an interdisciplinary graduate level student intern in human-focused energy system services.

Job Duties  

This position will support one or more of the following areas:
• Field experiments involving individual interactions with multi-modal transportation systems.
• Field or laboratory experiments centered on informing product choice with energy and environmental information.
• Online surveys and experiments intended to inform, support, and refine the above experiments.

This position will support the work by:
• Building devices, designing and implementing apps as well as hardware in iOS and/or Android
• Performing literature review, preparing technical reports, journal articles, and presentations.
• Staying abreast of the latest developments in mobile technology, the internet of things and data analytic techniques. Staying abreast of the latest developments in emerging information related to energy economics and technology.
• Developing experimental protocols, surveys and mobile applications
• Designing, conducting and managing experiments that collect data from individuals.
• Cleaning and analyzing experimental data.

Required Education and Experience  

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution.

Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation.

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Additional Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes  

Candidates must have:

• Experience or classes in developing Open Street Maps or GIS databases
• Experience creating apps for GIS
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to synthesize data from disparate fields of research.
• Demonstrated interest in emerging renewable energy technologies

Preferred Qualifications  

Knowledge of computer programming, familiarity with statistics or econometrics, demonstrated interest in energy and environmental issues, experience with IRB review boards, publishing, and running experiments involving human subjects. Demonstrated skills in one or more of the following areas:
1. Hardware prototyping. Machine learning, computer vision, augmented reality. Strong programming abilities in javascript, python/R (for data analysis), iOS and/or Android. Knowledge of popular data visualization software packages.
2. Skills interfacing with public GIS datasets, transportation planning / modeling, agent based modeling.
3. Marketing, behavioral economics, discrete choice modeling, and survey design.
