Internship Opportunity

With the generous support of the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS), Pembina is pleased to be offering a 12 week internship available to fulltime students at any of the PICS universities (SFU, UBC, UVIC, UNBC). Through this internship you’ll have the opportunity to work directly on projects that are making a difference to climate policy in B.C. We are looking for someone who is passionate about climate change and understands the urgency we face in dealing with this global issue. If you are someone who is equally comfortable digging into research on energy policy, facilitating a workshop or writing a policy brief for government, then read on.

Roles and Responsibilities

The intern will be responsible for supporting ongoing work on two key projects:

1.  Advancing Net Zero Buildings:the intern will be working with a variety of stakeholders (builders, developers, city planners, utilites, provincial government) to support our work in articulating the policy pathway for BC to reach net zero energy building standards. Specific work will include:

• Research into best practices on net zero policy applications
• Writing policy briefs to describe possible pathways for B.C. to move to net zero buildings
• Supporting on the execution of workshops or events (including facilitation, note taking, organizing, etc.)
• Participation in strategic planning

Minimizing the impacts of shale gas development: the intern will be working be engaging with the provincial government, First Nations, local communiities, industry, academia and environmental groups to better understand technology and policy options to reduce the impact of shale gas development associated with LNG development.Specific work will include:

• Research the technologies and practices capable of reducing environmental impacts and risks of shale gas development
• Assessment of the economics of the identified technologies and practices  to enable a comparison between potential solutions based on environmental benefits and financial costs.
• Writing policy briefs about how to best achieve reduced environmental impacts and risks
• Participation in strategic planning

Internship timing

The internship will be full time (40 hours/week) for 12 weeks from May to August. However, we are also interested in candidates who would be able to start sooner.

Compensation

The intern will be paid $20/hr.
