The ICCT seeks a highly self-motivated, enthusiastic summer intern to provide analytical support for an ICCT airline fuel efficiency ranking.

In 2013 the ICCT assessed the fuel efficiency of U.S. airlines in its benchmark study of 2010 domestic operations. Since then, there have been subsequent updates of the U.S. domestic ranking, as well as expansion of the rankings to other global regions. Position Responsibilities

Working under an aviation program staff, tasks for this position will include:

  • Developing an understanding of the methodological approaches used by the ICCT to rank airlines on fuel efficiency
  • Gathering airline operations data and model aircraft fuel burn
  • Compiling a dataset containing information on airlines’ fuel use and operations
  • Compiling additional datasets to support explanatory analyses of the ranking results
  • Drafting an airline fuel efficiency ranking report

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled Masters or undergraduate student in a technical discipline (engineering, environmental science, statistics, or related field); recent graduates also considered
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) required
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills required
  • Ability to convey technical information clearly (verbally and in writing) to both technical and non-technical audiences required
  • Past experience analyzing medium to large databases in a programming language (Python, etc.) desirable
  • Proficiency in statistic modeling tools (R/STATA/Minitab, etc.) desirable
  • Proficiency in English required; proficiency in a second language desirable
  • Interest in the airline industry and environmental effects of transport desirable

Position Details

We seek candidates who can work full-time (40 hours per week) for 12-16 weeks in the summer of 2019. This internship is located in our San Francisco, CA office near the Montgomery BART station. Position pays an hourly wage based on education and experience.
