The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation’s primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. NREL’s Strategic Energy Analysis Center has an opening for a junior/senior undergraduate level student internship in renewable energy modeling software tool development and analysis.
Position will support the continued development of the System Advisor Model (SAM). Duties may include assisting NREL researchers with subhourly irradiance data synthesis modeling and tool development, validating new renewable energy system models, helping with inverter database management, programming software enhancements, and investigating user support enquiries, among other potential tasks.
Must be enrolled as a full-time student.

Undergraduate students enrolled in a minimum of twelve credit hours.

Graduate students enrolled in a minimum of nine credit hours.

Minimum of a 3.0 grade point average in the last completed semester.

Must be a United States citizen or permanent resident.
Excellent written and oral communications. Engineering, computer science, or mathematics and statistics background. Ability to follow detailed requirements and produce quality work in a timely fashion. Must be able to work a minimum of 16 hours per week (maximum 30) in our Golden, Colorado office during the school year, and up to 40 hours a week during the summers.
Mechanical or electrical engineering background, coupled with C++ programming experience, particularly for graphical user interface desktop software using wxWidgets. Demonstrated breadth of coursework in Engineering, Computer Science, and/or Mathematics disciplines.
