Job/Research Summary The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Center for Transportation Technology and Systems in Golden, CO has an opening for a student internship. The position is part-time (up to 20 hours per week) during the school year and full time (up to 40 hours per week) during the summer. Working with experimental data captured using onboard CAN and GPS devices, the student will assist senior staff by performing data analysis on experimental data that will be used to investigate the behavior of advanced technology vehicles in fleets across the country. In addition to providing analytical support for a number of key projects, the student will also have the opportunity to assist in the continued development of computer models used to analyze field data. Working with test data, the student will help validate and improve existing models.
Job Duties Perform analysis on experimental data using existing Matlab based tools/models. Examine results using common statistical approaches to search for underlying trends. Assist with evaluation/improvement of existing multivariate models through experimentation. Support ongoing research with contributions to publications and presentations.
Required Education and Experience Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program at an accredited institution.

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
Additional Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes Strong background in data analysis and statistics is required. Experience with computer programming and application of computer models is also necessary. In particular, experience using Microsoft Excel and Matlab as numerical analysis tools. Strong interpersonal communication skills, experience presenting, and writing required. Ability to work both independently and with a team as needed.
Preferred Qualifications The ideal applicant possesses skills in MATLAB and Excel in addition to an understanding of physics/dynamics and analysis of experimental data captured through electronic data acquisition methods. Vehicle engineering or vehicle testing and instrumentation experience a plus. Knowledge of OBD CAN signals and GPS is valuable.
