A student internship is available in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL’s) National Wind Technology Center (NWTC). The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is the nation's primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.
With guidance from management and senior staff, this position will support the offshore wind program at the NWTC through the modeling and dynamic analysis of offshore wind turbine systems. The successful candidate will join a team of researchers examining a variety of offshore wind system designs to better understand their behavior and support the advancement and innovation of offshore wind. Duties may include developing models of offshore wind structures within FAST, running simulations, and assessing the accuracy of the response behavior of the structures. In addition, the successful candidate may participate in writing technical reports and presenting the results.
Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program at an accredited institution. 

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Excellent written and oral communication. Degree in mechanical engineering, or related discipline. Demonstrated experience with mathematical modeling and numerical techniques. Working knowledge of technical disciplines important to offshore wind energy systems including fluid dynamics (rotor aerodynamics and wave-body hydrodynamics) and structural dynamics. Excellent interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills.
Experience with FAST, NREL’s dynamic simulation modeling software used for offshore wind turbine simulation analysis.
