A Junior/Senior undergraduate student internship position is available from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) Strategic Energy Analysis Center’s Data Analysis and Visualization group in our Golden, Colorado office. NREL is the nation's primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The immediate opening is to assist the Geographic Information Systems service center with ongoing data processing, mapping and analysis tasks. The position is part-time (15-30 hours per week) during the fall and spring semester and full time (40 hours per week) during the summer or as class schedule allows. Duties may include data creation, data QA/QC, metadata generation, geoprocessing, map production and application testing for multiple renewable energy technologies (solar, wind, transportation and others).
Working with staff in the Geographic Information Systems service center to create high quality data, analysis and mapping products. Typical tasks include: geo-coding facility locations to create geospatial data; data and metadata updates for central data server; geo-spatial analysis of overlap of areas of interest with renewable resource characteristics; testing and providing feedback on web application functionality; creating renewable resource mapping products.
Must be enrolled as a full-time student.

Graduate students enrolled in a minimum of nine credit hours.

Undergraduate students enrolled in a minimum of twelve credit hours.

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Must be a United States citizen or permanent resident.
Demonstrated proficiency utilizing standard Microsoft Office software, particularly data manipulation in Excel and/or Access. Strong verbal, presentation, and technical writing abilities, sound interpersonal communication skills, detail-oriented, innovative, and adaptable.
Ability to work well in a team or independently with limited supervision. Demonstrated proficiency in utilizing ESRI ArcGIS software, and thorough understanding of spatial data characteristics.
Familiarity with other Geographic Information Systems software packages such as Quantum GIS.
Programming experience in Python.
