Description

Original Volunteers has been organising placements in small projects in developing countries for over 10 years.

Original Volunteers is currently looking to recruit a long stay volunteer/intern to develop a fledgling tree planting and conservation awareness programme in Eastern Ghana close to lake Volta.

The tree planting programme has been running successfully at smal scale during the summer since 2014, volunteer numbers and funds permitting.

It is hoped that long term, this can be extended to a year round project including an educational element, with the right candidate. The new role will also involve educational awareness on the issues surrounding deforestation and the effect this is having locally, together with other local concerns.

Research and data collection should also form a part of any stay with participating volunteers actively engaged in this.

It is foreseen that educational workshops will take place in the local schools and community centers.

Particpating volunteers will also need to be made aware through workshops to understand more fully local issues aswell as basic environmental education as many will be environmental novices and will be supported to work together to present workshops.

The local permanent team who support non-conservation volunteers and run community programme do not have a background in conservation although they are aware of the basics since starting the programme, so will also require some support.

This role is best suited to a self-starter with a 'can-do' approach who would like to develop their own project. You will not be expected to look after volunteers outside of their conservation work with you, a separate volunteer support team carries out after-hours support.

Free accommodation in clean, modern volunteer house provided. It may be possible to provide a small stipend, volunteer numbers permitting. If no stipend is available we expect daily living expenses to be in the region of £4/$7 a day. Transport to most locations can be provided by the local support team.

Funding for the programme is extremely limited other than the funds volunteers are encouraged to bring with them and donate, you will be required to think on your feet and work with near-zero resources using donations as carefully as possible and free material that you can source locally.

The preferred term of stay will be either (i) February to end October or (i) June to end September/end October

Anyone interested in this exciting opportunity to head up your own project should send their CV and a covering letter to Caroline at contact@originalvolunteers.co.uk
