BRUSSELS OFFICE

  Download this Document

IETA is the leading voice of the business community on the subject of emissions trading.
Our member companies comprise some of the largest and most respected businesses in the
world, as well as specialists in trading and related services. IETA promotes emissions trading
as an essential part of an effective and efficient response to climate change. IETA engages
in all aspects of the development of emission trading systems, acting as a policy think tank,
advocate to governments, and convener of dialogues. – www.ieta.org

Description: IETA is looking for an International Policy Director to fill a role at the heart of IETA’s
mission to advance the use of market-based solutions to address climate change and other
environmental challenges.

IETA currently has two International Policy Director positions, supporting IETA’s Country Offices,
providing thought leadership on trading policy matters from a business perspective, and providing
direct services to members. The International emissions trading policy work is split between them
according to demand and activity in different fields, and the experience and competences of the
post-holders.

The IP Director position currently being advertised will have primary responsibility for the
management of IETA’s policy and advocacy work related to the United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change. Among other major work areas that could form part of the
responsibilities of the current role, depending on the experience of the chosen candidate, are
detailed coverage of the Clean Development Mechanism and Joint Implementation, the increasingly
important work on Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV), and Forestry and Land-Use
Carbon Policy.

The post-holder will act as the IETA secretary of member company working groups related to these
issues and will be responsible for related research, analysis and commentary, including developing
innovative policy proposals, writing meeting reports and contributing to internal and external
studies. The post-holder will also be expected to support the work carried out in IETA country
offices (US, Canada, EU), as needed. He or she may also have responsibility for following tradingrelated
developments in specific countries where IETA does not have offices. And as all IETA staffs,
support program development and some logistics for IETA’s carbon market conferences and ad-hoc
meetings and workshops.

He or she will play a part in managing the work of interns. The position
will involve frequent international travel (perhaps away from the office 20-30% of the time).
Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a commitment to the establishment of
emissions trading globally and few years of relevant work experience, for example, in the carbon
market, a trade association, or research institute. The successful candidate would be expected to
have a Masters degree in environmental studies, international relations, or similar relevant field.
Other qualifications include the following:

· Must have a sound knowledge of the UNFCCC negotiation process, and preferably the
detailed operation of the CDM and other Kyoto flexible mechanisms;

· Good knowledge of verification, MRV policy, carbon accounting issues, and ideally
knowledge of financial accounting as it relates to carbon as well.

· Good knowledge of international deforestation, agriculture and other land use policy
(e.g. an understanding of issues around the establishment of a REDD+ crediting
mechanism) would be an advantage;

· Must have excellent English writing skills and be able to clearly and concisely summarize
reports, studies, and other information in English for IETA members;

· Must be a team player and comfortable working in a small office environment where
the priorities of the organization often override individual responsibilities;

· Must be comfortable finding compromise and building consensus among IETA member
companies and advocating for the interests of our member companies, even when they
differ from personal views;

· Must be pro-active, autonomous and comfortable managing a heavy workload of many
disparate elements

· Must have excellent advocacy and networking skills and be comfortable giving public
presentations and moderating discussions in English.

IETA’s official language is English; but competence in other languages (especially French, Spanish,
Mandarin, Japanese, Hindi, Korean) would be an advantage.

The position is vacant as of mid-July 2011. The post will preferably be located at IETA’s HQ in
Geneva, but co-location with IETA’s Brussels office would also be a possibility.

Competitive salary and benefits offered.
Deadline for responses: July 8 2011

Please email your application, cover letter and resume to us at humanresources@ieta.org
mentioning “International Policy Director Application” in the subject. Please note that IETA will only
respond to shortlisted candidates.
