Job description

Short Summary

JNCC has an ambitious work programme on marine protected areas (MPAs) in line with the UK Government’s aim “to recover and protect the richness of our marine environment and wildlife through the development of a strong, ecologically coherent and well managed network of marine protected areas”. JNCC, as statutory advisors on nature conservation to the UK Government and the Devolved Administrations, provide specialist advice on MPAs in UK offshore waters to help the UK meet its international obligations and national objectives to establish an MPA network..

Due to our strong track record in the delivery of expert advice on MPAs, JNCC is a delivery partner of the Ocean Country Partnership Programme (OCPP) which is funded through official development assistance (ODA) as part of the UK’s £500 million Blue Planet Fund. Through the OCPP JNCC works with the Centre for the Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) and the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) to partner with ODA-eligible countries delivering tangible and positive impacts on the livelihoods of coastal communities that depend on healthy marine ecosystems.

As one of the International Marine Coordination Managers at JNCC, you will be responsible for the technical delivery of the MPA workstream of the OCPP, accountable to and line managed by the International MPA Lead Specialist. The role will involve close working relationships with technical specialists in both Cefas and the MMO and with policy leads in Defra to ensure effective ‘on the ground’ delivery of MPA technical assistance in target countries. It will be your responsibility to work with the delivery team and key staff in the MMO and Cefas to produce and deliver technical assistance projects, considering what is feasible in the current virtual setting in which we all work. You will also be responsible to support the International MPA Lead Specialist in strategic governance and reporting of the OCPP.

JNCC strategically leads the International Partnership on MPAs, Biodiversity and Climate Change which is an alliance of government agencies and organisations working together to progress the evidence base around the role of MPAs and biodiversity tackling climate change. Other partners include Chile, USA, Costa Rica and France.
