 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 The Nature Conservancy works to achieve the effective conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services in all of the world’s major habitats. This position aims to mobilize international and national financial resources and influence international finance institutions and the local government and private sectors in support of biodiversity conservation action in Brazil, based on current and future grants and loans from international banks, overseas development agencies, locally established funds, governmental organizations, and other finance institutions active on credit and credit related policy to the agribusiness, forestry and infrastructure sectors and to conservation projects. Some of the funds mobilized should go directly to finance TNC programs.

To achieve this, the professional in place will: lead the design of TNC’s national strategy for the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and related implementing agencies; map, understand and work for the effective implementation of grants received or under negotiation by the Brazilian Government with bilateral and multi-lateral finance institutions and of the related rules for international finance institutions (IFIs); influence grants and loans received by federal and state level government towards biodiversity sound investments; leverage resources committed through local mechanisms such as the Amazon Fund and existing and future compensation funds; track and influence safeguard policies of IFIs; identify opportunities and mentor the development of proposals for funding TNC activities in areas such as agribusiness, forestry or infrastructure; and support the engagement of IFIs and local organizations in TNC proposals.

In details, it includes:
- Strengthen collaborative ties between TNC and the Brazilian government, on its international agenda related to funds for conservation;
- Support the design of a long-term, at-scale funding plan to support conservation action in Brazil, considering the role of both national and international funds;
- Develop and implement engagement strategies with major bilateral and multilateral institutions acting in Brazil (Embassies and ODA agencies, PNUD, UNEP, World Bank Group, IDB, KFW and others);
- Develop and implement engagement strategies with the local government and private sectors, including the Ministry of the Environment (MMA), the National Biodiversity Fund (FUNBIO), the Chico Mendes Institute, and local and multinational private sector organizations such as Cargill, Caterpillar, CitiGroup, the National Confederation of Industries, and members of the Mais Unidos CSR Alliance led by the U.S. Embassy, aimed at identifying and consolidating opportunities for public-private partnerships;
- Track and influence GEF replenishment processes and effectiveness of investments in Brazil and support negotiations of GEF-funded projects for TNC and partners.
- Assess trends, opportunities and priorities for funding conservation action at scale within local, bi-lateral and multi-lateral institutions
- Engage TNC in ongoing local, bi- and multi-lateral projects, based on the understanding of TNC ongoing projects in the three Conservation Programs in Brazil (Amazon, Central Savannas and Atlantic Forest);
- Support the Climate Policy Advisor, the Country Representative and other members of External Affairs on specific negotiations such as debt-for-nature swaps and climate change related mechanisms, among others;
- Monitor and influence the implementation of the local, $1 billion Amazon Fund, by working at the policy level to include TNC’s programs, partners and priorities in the Fund’s agenda, in collaboration with the climate policy advisor;
- Mobilize funds from Government of Brazil/IBRD Rainforest Trust Fund for TNC priority activities in the area of agriculture/agribusiness;
- Identify opportunities, support the design of proposals and support cultivation and reporting on approved projects by TNC Conservation Programs and advise on the relationship with donor agencies;
- Inform TNC and other partners on the status of national and international funding for conservation in Brazil, based on special assessment and direct management of TNC tools to monitor engagement with national and international finance institutions for the mobilization of public and private funds (e.g.: Tracking tool/Mobilize);
- Serve as main focal point in country for International Financial Institutions in the organization.
 BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
 • Bachelor’s degree in business, or related; and 6 months experience in relations, banking, investment, business development, or related; or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
• Fluency in Portuguese and English are required.
• Supervisory experience.
• Communications experience including presenting to government and business leaders, investors, or equivalent; and working in partnership with other organizations.
• Experience with MS Office, Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Database management.
 ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
 KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
• Bachelor’s degree in business or international relations, and 6 months experience in international cooperation, international relations, or equivalent.  Master’s degree may be preferred.
• Working knowledge of current trends in relevant discipline.
• Excellent communications in English and Portuguese. Spanish also desirable
• Understanding of and relevant experience in the culture of the country/region.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the business and environmental needs and practices of the pertinent region
• Demonstrated experience in MS Office, Word and Excel.  May require database management skills with ability to produce reports. 
• Ability to use advanced computer functions including navigating the Internet. 
• Ability to manipulate, analyze and interpret data.
• Senior-level experience in planning and/or management of protected areas, or the equivalent, or approved experience in public administration, official accounting, and international finance systems related to biodiversity conservation.
• Knowledge about bilateral or multilateral-funded projects.
• Ability to work effectively with governmental and non-governmental organizations and local communities to realize project objectives.
• Experience with biodiversity and general environmental issues in Brazil (South American experience is desirable).
• Experience in grant making, proposal design and project management.
• Ability to work with partners/government agencies without violating any restrictions related to conflicts of
interest, lobbying former employers, or influencing decision makers.

• Work in partnership with other organizations in a collaborative and advisory capacity.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
• Willingness to travel 20-30% of the time.
• Work requires only minor physical exertion and/or physical strain.  Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements.
