Description

This post will have a base in either Peterborough or Aberdeen. Under current circumstances we can be flexible around remote working options until such time that we are able to return to the office.

The successful candidate would then be expected to be able to work from one of these locations for the first six months of their employment. Flexible and remote working options can then be considered after this period. The post-holder may be required to attend meetings at various localities in the UK, and potentially internationally, involving overnight stays away from home.

Looking for an opportunity to have a genuine impact on Government policy across the UK and around the world? Then JNCC is the employer for you.

Who are JNCC?

We’re the environment’s best kept secret. Established in 1990, we’re the UK’s statutory advisor on issues affecting the natural environment across the UK and internationally. Our primary role is advising all four Governments of the UK. With most of our work being within Government, our public profile is low but our impact is high.

What’s the role?

JNCC provides advice on matters as varied as sustainable governance of the UK’s offshore and overseas marine environments, understanding the impacts of the UK’s overseas trade and development assistance on the natural environment, and supporting the UK’s domestic implementation of its international environmental obligations.

Based in the International Advice Team in JNCC, this post will play a key role in advising on international biodiversity issues with an emphasis on supporting the production of UK biodiversity indicators and producing reports to a range of multi-lateral environmental agreements (MEAs) to which the UK is Party.

You will be working with a wide range of specialists and stakeholders, including UK government departments, the devolved governments in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales and specialists from across JNCC and the Country Nature Conservation Bodies.  Your workload will be varied and regularly changing in line with the priorities of our customers. There may be opportunity for international travel associated with this post.

Who are we looking for?

As befits an influential Government advisory role, we’re looking for an individual with a good understanding of the importance of the relationship between scientific research, evidence and policy development. Effective communication is essential, as is an ability to build and maintain relationships (both internally and externally). You will have strong experience in research, statistical analysis and data management. Full details of the role are included in the job description. For an individual with the right characteristics, but limited experience, we can provide training and support to develop your skills.

Why JNCC?

We’re small enough (c.200 staff) that you’ll know everyone by name, but big enough that we have all the skills, resources and people you’ll need to get the job done. We have a very flexible and welcoming organisational culture. Our Executive Management focus on supporting advisers with the freedom and tools they need to get their jobs done. You will benefit from our supportive workplace culture, excellent holiday and pension benefits, as well as an exciting job in a unique environment. No two days will be the same and we welcome diversity in all its forms.
