Description

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is looking for an intern, based at ZSL's offices in Regents Park, to provide support on the Monitoring Protected Area Project. This project is a collaborative project between the Institute of Zoology and Conservation Programmes department at ZSL, aiming at providing information regarding the state and the level of threats faced by the global protected area network.

Main tasks would include (but not exhaustive):

  • GIS manipulation of remote sensing data
  • Carrying out literature searches to compile data
  • Attending meetings and events

This internship will not involve any field work and will be desk-based only. There will be opportunities to help with the production of publications.

The ideal candidate should:

  • have an undergraduate degree or above in geography, environmental science or biology
  • have good knowledge of GIS (ArcGIS)
  • have excellent English both written and spoken
  • be IT proficient
  • have strong research skills
  • have knowledge of quantitative research methods

Finally, the intern must be self-motivated with a strong interest in helping to develop the project.

ZSL is offering:

  • Facilities including computer, internet, library and relevant software
  • A 6 month contract with daily expense (travel Zones 1-6 and lunch costs - max £5 per day) covered

Ideal period of volunteer contract:

  • 10 June 2013 – 10 December 2013
  • Four days per week
